Name Filter (Why I am beginning to avoid playing C:MW)

  • Dear Torn Banner,

I would like to request some sort of language filter that can be used on players’ names.

I’m finding that somewhere around one quarter of the people on a given server have deliberately chosen names that are designed to create disgusting images or cause offense in some way. I could give you a list of specific examples (starting with one about a prolapsed anus) but I think the best way to demonstrate this would be for you to just log in and play on a public server.

I have paid good money for this game, and quite frankly some of the names people choose are causing me to choose not to play. This doesn’t even touch on the usual filth that is being communicated in “All:” chat.

I understand that the mute ability will soon (if not already?) include an effect that ignores the chat of the muted player. This will help, but it will be incredibly tedious to stop and apply mute to every player that starts spouting all sorts of hatespeech (and I am not referring only to the expected racism that plagues the chat).

I understand that the game can be frustrating, and makes people’s emotions run wild. It is to be expected that there will be insults flying and whatnot. That all seems to add to the “medieval” experience of the game. This is why I do not want to simply turn off all chat, although having the option would be nice.

However, some (re: a lot) of the players are not venting frustrations, but attempting to spread their racism, sexism, etc. using the most offensive language found in their feeble vocabularies. This breaks the immersion very severely, at least in my experience. It’s also another reason that I’m beginning to avoid playing the game that I paid money for.

Again, since it bears repeating: if you want to see evidence for the things I’m describing here, simply log on and play the game for a couple of hours on a public server.

As I have created this forum profile specifically for the purpose of this post, it is unlikely that I will be checking this for replies. This is merely intended to communicate a problem that is causing me to not use the product I paid for, which is likely experienced by many other players.

The only reason I bother spending the time to post this here is because, as far as I can tell, the people at Torn Banner Studios have acted responsibly and in good faith in all their dealings with their players/customers. It probably doesn’t get said enough, but thank you for that–it shows a depth of character that is sorely lacking in some of the other companies I have been foolish enough to buy from, and in my opinion sets you above and beyond your competitors, even more than just producing a game that I love.

    Sincerely,
    Player

    Its called ignoring.

Don’t think those thoughts. I reas those names and almost no thought about it goes through my head. I focus on the game.

People chatting about however is a different thing. As it usually escalated into something bigger. Even then that’s server rules and the moderators are the ones responsible for upholding the rules.

This game isn’t a kids game. And usually a game doesn’t get rated for its online interactions. If games did all multiplayer games would be rated at the highest. Though ratings are largely ignored in America. Its not illegal over there what’s the point in having them.

  • Really? I usually lol when I see a person with a ridiculous name. :p

Yeah thats in Beta so coming soon.

As for the rest you learn to ignore the sillyness of drunk teenagers whose purpose is only to get reactions from people like you.

There is far too much PC in this side of the pond anyway.

  • Dude, seriously, you must lead a sheltered life. If your sensibilities are offended so easily you had best not frequent any kind of comments or chat or anything on the internet, because I guarantee you will be offended. Are there a bunch of idiots playing this game? Sure there are, but any game that has any kind of public interaction will have the same idiots. Stick to playing single player games off the net and your sensibilities will remain unsullied. The rest of us will miss you…not.

    Are you serious???
Have you even played this game???
As the name aptly suggests, it is a game about medieval warfare and depicts very graphically a number of very gruesome ways of killing your fellow man. Not exactly a bible stuff (not new testament anyway). Don’t think that Jeebus will hate you less if you cut out the offensive language or sexual references introduced by other players.
I am really appaled how people can get offended by vulgar words or even something as beautiful and natural as sex but they are completely desensitised to stabbing people in their neck, smashing their bones and knuckles with huge hammers or watching the pieces of their brain fall down from a head exploded by a mace.
Seriously, if I had kids I would rather have them watch porn than play this game and getting offended by language in a game like this really seems like a very bad case of hypocrite prudery.

  • A solid entry in the field of “Stupidest complaint directed at TBS instead of Steam”. Congratulations.

  • If you do not want to see the all chat…
    Options>Input> Change Chat to false.
    Hope this helps.

  • Boo hoo, I don’t like your name because it is “Poopy Butt Peepants” and that’s super gross! Everyone needs happy names with something yummy like cupcakes in it and we all talk about how cute puppies are in chat. Give me a break. Don’t like chat, disable it.

  • Are you offended Slaughtervomit’s name or my name? Both of them don’t give to pleasant images in your head if you think about them.

  • Goodness, I hope I never run into any of these offensive and lewd names.

  • You repeat the fact that you paid for this game like it somehow validates your point. We all paid for it.

The game isn’t what needs to be adjusted, it’s your own sensibilities. Immaturity exists, you need to get over that, because no one will do it for you.
I agree with Stickybuds here: stick to playing single player games.

  • Welcome to the internet!

  • I saw a commercial for a new Club Penguin game. I wonder how long it would take me to get banned…

  • People shouldn’t be able to be Christians, because when I hear about them I get annoyed.
People shouldn’t be able to listen to Rap, Pop, Country or Dubstep because I hate that shit and I pay taxes so that means I should have the ability to mute all of it.
People shouldn’t be able to kill me in Chivalry, I should just be able to kill them in one hit all the time because I paid money for this game.
People should all have two letter names like mine because its easier to understand and I paid money for this so that’s why.
    Grow the fuck up.

    +1.

Also, my in-game name is OFTEN “Aspergeri Ponirunkkari” which means “Asperger Ponyfucker” in english, pretty much. What kind of mental images does this give you? No one has been offended, so far, in fact I keep seeing good jokes about it. I’d like to hear your thoughts. This is the internet, for christ’s sake. Get used to seeing profanity, and ridiculous things.

I love people with names like that. My gaming experience actually improves if I get to fight people with such names!

  • I like what you said just now, good sir!

  • It’s an interesting idea though. Having a settings option to turn every name on the server into a randomly generated medieval name that only affects you if you turn it on options. I approve.

  • @Praslek:

    Dear Torn Banner,

Please handhold me through my experience of your game and protect me from all those meany-faces on the internet that say bad words because I cannot possibly exercise sufficient force of will to ignore things I disagree with. Those bad names are just poisoning my fragile mind while playing this game that’s all about dismembering and burning alive all your enemies and sometimes innocent peasants in a vivid splash of gore and violence.

    Sincerely,
    Player

I really hope you don’t have kids, since they’d be forced to live in a bubble until they are 18 (or 30) and then get a rude awakening when exposed to the world.
