This game has the worst stutter EVER

  • Compared to other games using the Unreal engine Chivalry does not even look like it was written with UDK.Dishonored used the same engine and its butter smooth.Yet chivalry is a complete mess whenever the mouse is moved.

    I have tried every fix i have in my arsenal that i do battle with in other games that stutter but chivalry has defeated me in my efforts.I have tried framerate capping to 60fps with MSI afterburner and the games ini config.I have tried pre rendered frames from 0-4 and i tried vsync off,HPET,5 reinstalls and drivers and its the exact same.I also tried oneframelagahead=false which i felt made it a little better but also killed my fps in equal measure.The only real fix i found was using lower DPI which always works for me when microstutter is bad.Higher dpi just shows it more but chivalry demands such a high sensitivity for blocking and dragging swings that lowering your dpi will only hurt your scores online.

    The first person spectator mode is the worst.It has to much microstutter on text and animations and the mouse movement it makes me feel dizzy and sick.Ingame and youtube of other people is a bit better but still really obvious.The best place to focus is on the objective markers when looking around.Everytime your mouse moves the objective texts jumps up and down.Sometimes when im looking around normally all i can see is the Trebuchet 1 text going up and down up and down bouncing around like i have 10fps.Its not very nice and makes me very sick.

    My computer is 3570k at 4700mhz with 16GB of ram and GTX 580 with two SSD’s in a raid 0 config.Every other game i own works fine just this chivalry.

  • Hi rdonnell,

    Thanks for reaching out. Although I haven’t experienced this myself, Menthalion appears to have ventured into such issues involving mouse stutter/lag and posted this:

    @Menthalion:

    I’ll try keep this post updated with ways that have worked to fix mouse lag / float / acceleration problems in Chivalry medieval Warfare.

    First, make sure the problem isn’t caused by fps lag by using the ‘stat fps’ command from the console (` key) and checking if your fps is stable and high enough.

    Then, try the following
    (You can do all of these in one go or step by step, whichever you prefer)

    • unplug any XBOX 360 (compatible) controllers before starting game

    • turn in-game mouse smoothing off

    • disable Enhance Pointer Precision in Control Panel>Mouse>Pointer Options

    • disable mouse acceleration in your proprietary mouse software (ie Logitech)

    • Open My Documents/My Games/Chivalry Medieval Warfare/UDKGame/Config/UDKInput.ini
      Alter all these settings:
      ViewAccel_YawThreshold=0
      ViewAccel_DiagonalThreshold=0
      ViewAccel_BaseMultiplier=0
      ViewAccel_TimeToHoldBeforeFastAccelerat ion=0
      ViewAccel_RampSpeed=0
      ViewAccel_MaxTurnSpeed=0
      ViewAccel_Twitchy=0
      ViewAccel_PitchThreshold=0
      ViewAccel_LookingUpOrDownBoundary=0
      ViewAccel_BackToCenterBoundary=0
      ViewAccel_BackToCenterSpeed=0

    If that didn’t work

    Some games (Chivalry included) don’t use raw mouse input, and will get mouse acceleration even if it’s turned off in windows/mouse driver.

    • You can disable this mouse acceleration the pro-gamer way with MarkC’s mouse acceleration fix for Win 7 & 8
      (includes check if disabling worked)
      This sets the used acceleration profile to be linear, so there’s no actual acceleration feel anymore, even though acceleration is technically still enabled. Works for all games that use this way to read mouse values.

    If those don’t fix the problem, please state

    • mouse sensitivity setting in game

    • your mouse DPI/USB rate settings

    • your fps min/avg/max while playing (‘stat fps’ command from console (` key))

    Definitely worth a blast, let me know what happens! Menthalions thread on this is here

  • Hi there i dont mean to be rude but you make it sound like its my mouse or my end of the game when its the game code/animations/netcode.You said you dont experience this yourself so can you mouse around and record the objective markers with no jumping/jittering/microstutter at all? If you can you would be one of the only people i know off on multiple computers who has a smooth chivalry.

    I have trawled youtube videos and everyone is in the same boat as it happens regardless of settings.I already tired all those accel=0 settings, one frame lagahead=0, pre rendered frames,frame capping and im 100% in my conclusion that is it the game.

    Also most of those fixes listed below are pretty basic fixes.I have never owned a 360 controller and i have always had mouse smoothing off and any kind of acceleration.

    unplug any XBOX 360 (compatible) controllers before starting game
    turn in-game mouse smoothing off
    disable Enhance Pointer Precision in Control Panel>Mouse>Pointer Options
    disable mouse acceleration in your proprietary mouse software (ie Logitech)

    Also my mouse sensitivity in game is 35 and my mouse DPI is 1800 and its polling rate is tested working at 1000hz.I dont have my stat fps stats yet but i can assure you with my rig its almost always a minimum of 60fps.

    I mean just look at the state of the stutter in first person spectator mode….It is the worst i have ever saw in any game and thats without me even moving my mouse…so that part is unrelated to the mouse.

  • also i wanted to add that anyone with any doubt as to how bad the mouse and microstutter is in this game needs to disable depth of field and motion blur to really see how bad it is.I actually forgot to point out that but that the blur from FXAA,depth of field and motion blur actually helps hide how bad the microstutter is.

    So go in game disable motion blur and depth of field and watch how objective markers on hillside or that map with the slaves stutters….Its almost as bad as spectator mode in first person.And its not just me there are a few threads on here about this microstutter.

    viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12803&p=120618#p120618

  • I have disabled both depth of field and motion blur, and haven’t got the problems you described.

    Even then, singling out objective markers isn’t at all indicative of the rest of the graphics, since they’re a unique case. Because they need always to be rendered at the same scale, and should never be obscured by other objects, they aren’t rendered at the location of the objective itself, but projected to the view frustrum from that location toward the camera.

    In that they’re the only objects that are shown that way, and as such have no bearing on the rest of the graphics.

    Jittery character models I only seen when they’re stuck on some piece of geometry. I have no differences in that either playing in 1st or 3rd person or spectator mode.

    Also you go stating netcode being a possible issue, and comparing it to Dishonored, a single player game. I don’t think thats a completely valid comparison.

    With this I don’t want to say that YOU’RE not experiencing problems, but that either you’re more sensitive to it, or somehow your system is. I myself am pretty sensitive to FoV issues, while most gamers I know couldn’t care less about it. Your system also isn’t an ‘average’ spec, so it might have something to do with that.

    Anyways, if you’re thinking it is mouse related, and also have had similar issues in other games, I’d highly recommend to try the MarkC’s mouse fix mentioned earlier. Read the article accompanying the fix, and try the mouse diagnostic software that goes with it and you might see that although you have disabled mouse acceleration in windows and your mouse software, a lot of games use the wrong API to read mouse input and DO get acceleration/deceleration even though it is disabled in Windows. It’s already a given Chivalry uses that system.

    The fix works for most of the games that use that kind of mouse input, and only needs to be done once. I rarely have mouse lag/acceleration problems anymore, and almost never had to tweak any settings after applying it.

  • Hi do u mind posting a video of first person spectator mode then? Its just i dont believe you have no issues when every video of chivalry i view online for myself or anyone i talk to has microstutter.

    Take the thread i linked above for example.That person got to test chivalry from low end to high end on 7 different computers and you have suggested to be i may be over specced for the game.Well thats a first! How can being over specced cause stutter? Being under specced is what causes stutter.

    It is either subjective or your both having me on to get me off the forums as the online spectator mode in first person is awful.How would a mark c mouse fix even effect first person view when you dont move the mouse? Jitter here microstutter there and a mouse that moves like complete crap.

    I dont use that MarkC mouse fix but im going to put it on and disprove you that it will make even the slighest difference.And the bit about the objective markers is also wrong.The whole game behaves exactly like the objective markers do.You just need to open your eyes and pay more attention to it.

    Or maybe you simply cannot pick up on it.Can i ask if you can play a game at below 60fps? I cant my eyes go crazy and i need to play all games at a minimum of 60fps all the time.Even a fps dip to say 55 i percieve as a stutter.I still see first person mode so bad online that theres either a real nasty stutter bug going around or ive met the worlds first two people without first person spectator mode microstutter.

    PS Im sorry if my post sounds a bit angry but im simply mad that you claim first person spectator mode has no stutter.Its simply boggles my mind as to how you could miss it.

  • Well i tested all the above fixes including the MarkC mousefix and i even tried changing the lookdownscale and lookupscale from 250 and 300 to match each other at 0 and 0.

    It changed nothing apart from making lookdown overheads harder due to having no accel which i can feel has been changed with either the markc fix or the config fixes.

    Either way the hud and textures are still unstable.And ive come across another post on steam forums about the exact same issue.My mouse still moves in blocks or something so yea its simply bad coding.

  • @rdonnell:

    its simply bad coding.

    Odd, my core i7 920 with a 560 ti does not have this issue.

    Post your DxDiag.txt. Also, what resolution are you running at? Do you have any desktop scaling from Windows in effect?

  • As far as im aware and according to the settings ive always used my scaling is forced off so windows does not scale the image.I also use that 100% screensize thingy so its not that.And chivalry is the first game ive owned that does this.

    Ive also tested on my uncles pc and exact same issue is present.Its present on youtube,spectator mode and pretty much every video i view online so if you indeed have none of it then i cant understand why.You have 100% texture stability with the HUD then on all maps?

  • First thing to do is update that video card driver. Not saying it will fix, but can’t hurt.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/win8-win7-winvista-64bit-314.22-whql-driver.html

  • It makes no difference what driver i use.And i also notice something else to prove that its simply bad animator.

    The flail has stutter.I mean standing still and watching the flail do its normal animation is jitters on a certain animation everytime.Same as the HUD too.

    Its the game its no ones hardware or drivers its simply someone who needs to take a look at texture stability and do something about it.

  • It’s not anything to do with textures, it’s most likely lag compensation rapidly affecting the location of the other players from your point of view.

    HUD elements jittering is probably sloppy rounding when converting to screenspace coordinates / not averaging or interpolating location enough.

  • Well whatever it is dudeface is it awful and there has not been much word on them fixing anything in this game.I mean I still clip into terrain and vibrate since like release day so what are these guys doing?

    I know a lot of people who own this game yet, they still only have one animator? Did they blow all the sales money on a new studio or something?

    Thats the rumor and that due to it nothing will ever get fixed :/
