Was the "Grand Mace" an actual weapon?

  • I know this isn’t exactly offtopic but I didn’t want to clutter up the main board. I did some searching today and while I found examples of Cavalry Maces I could not find any two handed mace that matched the look and description of the Grand Mace that is in Chivalry. Was anything like the Grand Mace actually used historically?

  • I seriously doubt the grand mace, double axe or maul would have been useful weapons.

  • I don’t know I think the grand mace would actually be an excellent mace. It has a good spike on the end for poking and penetrating plate armor as well as spiked blunt face to puncture and bash armor.

  • The maul was probably too useful back then so they probably nerfed it until it became the hammers we have today.

Grand Mace was actually not intended to be a weapon at first… It originated in brothels and bath houses known as a “pleasure stick”. It was used for… all sorts of things. A passing warrior lost his sword and grabbed a nearby “pleasure stick” to defend himself in a fight and somehow won… He then called for a blacksmith to forge him one fit for battle and renamed it the Grand Mace.

    Seems legit.

You can’t just layer something with as many scary looking bits as possible and call it an effective weapon. It’s essentially a huge heavy club made of steel - it’ll almost certainly kill or cripple anyone it hits, but any trained fighter would have no problem avoiding it and stabbing you in the throat while you struggle to recover from slamming it into the ground. Same with the doubleaxe and maul.

  • There are many examples of large maces across all cultures. The weapon is some 8000 years old after all.
Egyptians made all metal maces that were very large for the size of the average person at that time. Persians made oversized cucumber maceheads that look much like the grand mace in the game. The Japanese kanabo-tetsubo is also similar.

In some parts of Europe, ‘mace-bearers’ were the bodyguards of royalty, noblemen or dignitaries. A tradition of overlarge ceremonial maces arose from this that continues today in parliaments, universities, secret societies (but I didn’t tell you that) and bars.

I think it fair to say the grand mace may have been used in battle but it is a very niche weapon.

Interestingly, google search of grand mace brings up mostly Chivalry links. :D

I know that the japanese did use a long two handed club similar to the grand mace and it was very effective! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanab%C5%8D
I’m still not sure if anything like this was use in Medieval Europe though.

It’s not just scary, it’s great at penetrating armor. It seems like it would take a lot of skill and strength to use though since you can be very vulnerable if you miss a swing.

Yup I noticed the same thing lol

The maul and double axe are real weapons but the grand mace is probably made up.

  • Yeah most of the weapons are real. I always imagined the grand mace being used on horse back. I hear the horsemen of the middle east used maces.

Well, I mean horsemen would have maces in general but I would think that it would be used on horseback.

Well wikipedia did say that Medieval Calvary would use large two handed maces from horseback.

Looks like a Grand Mace to me. Can’t get much closer than the Kanabo, though Chivalry’s is oversized just like the statue demon’s here.
