Some ideas I've been working on for vikings mod

  • Let me preface this by saying I’m definitely not a professional concept artist, I’m just a fan of vikings and a fan of chivalry, and thought why not bring those two things together! If anyone wants to help make this into a reality, contact me and maybe we can make something happen, or just post some of your own stuff here. Hope you like it!

  • I’m in no way skilled to actually help you realize this mod but I did want to say how fantastic your art is. The design looks really cool yet similar to the currently used models.

  • Beautiful art, man. I, too, want a viking mod, or just more viking stuff in the game in general. But I got to ask you, are you going for a more fantasy viking look, or actual viking look?

  • Amazing concept art, especially the archer.

I wanted it to be similar to the vanilla game, where for the most part it’s historically correct but with some fun things thrown in that aren’t necessarily accurate. It’ll need to be done that way with the weapons at least, since there aren’t really a lot of viking crossbows or greatswords.

Alright. I’m asking because personally I’d like for a somewhat accurate portrayal of vikings. The Mason Order, while a faction of fantasy, has nice viking-inspired themes (as well as eastern european and mongolian) and your concept art looks like fantasy variations of the Mason soldiery. Especially the archer.

If you’d like to make it less fantasy, it’s frankly just the weapons that will need to be made up. You don’t have to restrict yourself to the aesthetics of Scandinavian vikings though. You could use the people of Rus’, the Varangian Guard, even Anglo-Saxons are close enough to vikings. Lots of awesome historical stuff to recreate without the need of too much fantasy.

Either I want a more accurate viking mod, or I want Torn Banner to later on release more customizationg options so that we can not-too-drastically change armour and textures. I will totally make my already viking-esque Mason Knight look even more viking.

Anyways, some example pictures of how vikings could look.

This is a Rus’ viking (disclaimer: what I got when I searched for “rus viking”.) That is, a viking who travelled east on rivers to nowaday Russia and settling there for trade. You see eastern influences, like the helmet and the lamellar armour:

These are varangians (disclaimer: what I got when I searched for “varangian guard”.) These are vikings who travelled east on the rivers all the way down to Constantinople. Vikings were called Varangians in east and south-east Europe. Their skill in battle soon earned them the role of body guards of the Byzantine emperor, calling themselves the “Varangian Guard”:

Other illustrations of the varangian guard show them a bit more colourful, which is to be expected if they served in Constantinople. Also, here’s some guy’s artwork of varangians:

Oh, and here’s a few cool Anglo-Saxons I found, but they look like kings. The descriptive text for the picture itself was “raedwald of east anglia” who was a Saxon king:

When it comes to the weapons… yeah… a viking mod wouldn’t be able to replace them all. But is that really important? :P If new weapons were made to replace at least a majority of the current ones, they’d have to be rebalanced and all that already. The spear was the most commong viking weapon, so we could have a few variations of those.

    Edit:
And in my search for pictures, I also found this awesome gallery:

  • Oh yeah! I’d love to see the Varangians! With their warpaint :)

  • First of all I’d like to thank everyone for their feedback, it’s really appreciated. I’m leaving on vacation for a week so I won’t be able to update, but I’ve added some designs I’m really proud of and would love to see in-game. Also, I would prefer to keep the setting mostly in the most well known Viking Age, about 800 AD to 1000 AD or somewhere around there. Nothing against the Varangians, they’re really cool looking, but I’d prefer to keep it local.

  • That could be a varangian to the right there to me ;)

I mean, the Rus’ guys were varangians too - vikings who travelled east. When they ended up in Constantinople, they got to be a special miltary unit, and they recieved a lot of Byzantine gear. That picture of all those reenactors acting as the Varangian Guard might not be accurate. Just thought they had a cool mix of viking and byzantine.

  • I don’t really know the vikings stuff, so … great drawing really, and i’d love see that in game !

and yeah it could be a good idea to choose two clans… like agatha / mason.
There is a lot of possibilities.

  • Just so long as we get some mighty viking war cry’s :berz:

  • FOR VALHALLA!

Could you add Seanannar parody if this does happen?
