A History of Chivalry and its Community.

  • This is for anyone thinking about buying Chivalry in the near future and wanted a complete history of how it came to be and the community that followed.

    Chivalry: A History

Have a seat children as I take you on a journey you won’t soon forget.

Not long ago in a place of wonder, excitement, and porn there was a mod called Age of Chivalry. It was the brainchild of a group of exotic male dancers who also modded in their free time. Among these storied men, Steve “Babyface” Piggot declared that with 3 years of success with AoC perhaps it was time to earn money in a slightly less demeaning way in his famous “I’m done whoring myself” speech of 2010. Here’s an excerpt:

_“I had a dream! In it I was in school except I wasn’t wearing any clothing and my teeth fell out. I don’t know why I wanted to share that with you but it seemed pertinent at the time. Here’s what I really wanted to say. With the exotic male dancing industry drying up as well as our dignity, shan’t we strike out and make a name for ourselves in the business of virtual violence?”
    _
Fast forward to May 20, 2010, Chivalry: Peasant Murder Simulator was announced.*

After this announcement the community from AoC soon grew excited. As more and more details came forth, an alpha was announced. Torn Banner Studios were always a pragmatic bunch and so made sure that all alpha testers were people of their choosing in which they had dirt on. TBS made it clear through extortion that if these alpha testers didn’t help shape a revolutionary game, all their dirty secrets would be revealed to the world. And so, through 18 hour a day testing in sweatshop-esque conditions the testers persevered and and a Beta was born.

At the time the Beta was released the initial alpha testers, through psychological abuse, (TBS programmed their likenesses onto the peasants in the game to be murdered over and over again) had developed Stockholm syndrome and were therefore intensely loyal now. This caused quite a friction when the public was invited to help test the Beta. Understandably the alpha testers saw these new beta testers as a threat to their legacy and that of TBS. This began what is known as The War of Two Groups of People With Differing Opinions on the Direction of Chivalry. WTGPDODC for short. This ongoing war provides the current divisive shape this community contends with.

During the Beta, TBS realized they needed some more financial support to help fully realize their vision. They launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in September, 2012. As historians look back on this campaign most believe its success was primarily owed to the fact that the top “stretch goal” was a private dance by none other than Steve himself. Luckily Steve didn’t have to revisit his dark past in what would be a display of hypnotic pelvic thrusts and rippling abs as the goal wasn’t met. Looking back Steve surprising said, “Honestly at this point in development I would have rather danced for them despite my dignity if it meant we didn’t have to do customization…Fuck!”

With the release of the game on October 16, 2012 the “Golden Age” began. This era is often cited, by those that have the proper rose-tinted glasses, as the time before pain existed in the world, children never died, cancer didn’t exist, and photos of Steve Piggot’s dancing years were easily available on the web.

Post release tension rose in the WTGPDODC. Both sides at varying times gained or lost ground but most recently a huge blow was dealt to one side; the side with the largest collection of rose-tinted glasses stockpiled. They assert that their plight has grown much larger that just WTGPDODC and that in fact the end of the world itself is here. In fact they’ve said the current state of things is the exact opposite of the “Golden Age.” The other side is having trouble understanding their concern though because they have almost none of the glasses required to relate back to the “Golden Age.”

So children, this concludes our journey. We lost some people on the way because of this post’s length but for those that stuck through I believe you now have a better understanding of Chivalry and its community.

*The name was later changed to Chivalry: Medieval Warfare because of the public outcry of the Peasant population.

  • So does anybody have those pics of steve?

  • Alyx, Steve has asked that if any photos do exist that we not post them here because he wants his game judged by its merits and not by his own chiseled physique.

  • Very informative. TBS all being former male strippers was common knowledge but I didn’t know about the stretch goal. :P

  • @dillweasel:

The only hire guys too. Except for Kimi who was 2,000 miles away.

Personally if I had a business I would only hire girls.

Oh wait I did that, wife did not approve.

  • You should get a special Helm for that :D

  • Jesus, this post is GOLD haven’t laugh like this since months. This post almost made me forget about the horrible new patch.

  • @Toll:

Has anyone actually seen Kimi in real life though? She could just be another male stripper’s online persona.

  • Well, seeing as how she occasionally posts pictures of projects she’s working on in the “Off Topic” forum, and all the faces match up, I’d say she’s real.

You never realize how closely this game came to not existing.

  • @Alyx:

So does anybody have those pics of steve?

This is the only pic we need of Steve.

  • @SlyGoat:

Look at that horrendous grip and form! Practically asking for a sword in the gut.
2/10 see me after class Steven.

  • Has there ever been a cuter Lead Designer?

  • @Vlad:

Glad I was able to make you laugh, but I’m not really sure what’s so funny about this. This was just me thumbing through the TBS archives and I pulled this info up.

Really well done by the way. You have a very charismatic demeanor.

  • Thank you dill.

It was actually REALLY hard for me. Doing the UWE intro was my first time EVER doing that, so I was pretty nervous. :| Had a great time overall though both at UWE and TBS :) Everyone is truly awesome!
