Just started, need advice

  • So i bought the game yesterday. so far, i think its a super awesome game. I am just a little overwhelmed with classes and weapons, and game mechanics, let alone all the experienced players.

what are some noob friendly class/weapon builds? something that would be at least a little easy to break me into this game haha

  • For starting out I recommend only playing the knight class, has the best survivability which will allow you to stay longer on the battlefield and actually learn the game. Pick a weapon that you like and sink some time into it, can be anything really. Spend some time on the duel servers, they helped me a lot when I was learning. Also check out Hexen´s YT channel for weapon specific videos!

  • The vanguard-spear or -bardiche class is also pretty friendly, imo. Of course, I’m a little biased because I started with MAA, and starting out, EVERYTHING seems newb-friendly compared to MAA…I’d recommend spear though, especially if you’re coming from a modern FPS - the idea that you can hit thing that aren’t dead-center to you - yes, even off-screen - might throw you off (certainly did for me…). Spear doesn’t have that - the strikes goes right out, a bit past the center of the screen, then comes right back in. Easy. While I like the poleaxes, I find that they’re too easy to chop down teammates with (except the Halberd, since it’s got reach and a viable stab), and thus tend to avoid their use.

Also, it’s the furthest-reaching melee weapon in the game…which is why I use it still (though I tend towards the brandystock).

Most importantly, ask questions. If something happens that you don’t quite understand, ask how they managed it. True, you might start a veritable s**storm of “LOL EXPLOITER”, but in all of that, you’ll usually get a coherent answer.

  • Man at Arms - Not recommended when starting off. Far too fragile and requires knowledge of a lot of the weapon lengths and speeds.
Archer - Not recommended when starting off. Is far too different from other classes when it comes to primaries, and the melee combat tends to involve hoping you can overwhelm an opponent with a flurry of strikes before they can land a single hit on you.(Because if they do, you’ll die.) Essentially, not a lot you learn as Archer is very applicable to other classes.
Knight - Very durable and can take quite a few hits allowing you to make some mistakes. While his movement is slow, which may seem hindering, it will also force you to practice guarding better. His weapons are also fairly versatile and you’ll have quite a few options to pick from.
Vanguard - While still more durable than Archers and MAAs, Vanguards are more about their offense than their defense. Also a unique feature among them is that their weapons tend to have a lot more reach, which can teach you how to exploit distances and footwork.

As for loadout, I would recommend starting off as a Vanguard using the Spear. Spears have a fairly weak Slash, but good stabs and overheads. Because of this, it discourages you from relying heavily on Slashes, and instead teaches you to aim your attacks precisely and properly as well as encouraging you to adjust your Stabs after they’ve been released. It also teaches you to use your weapon’s reach to the fullest and keeping enemies at bay. The overhead works as a delayed stab which you can sometimes use to trick opponents into parrying early.

Also, as Greg mentioned, watch Shara’s videos. They were completely vital to my learning experience when I started off and explain some of the most important mechanics in Chivalry that the tutorial regretfully doesn’t.

HEXEN’s videos are nice, but won’t always be applicable to you. Every loadout can be played a variety of ways. It’s more important to find what’s comfortable for you than what someone else says is best.

  • Definitely do everything in the training/tutorial if you haven’t done that yet.

  • Adding to the good advice above:

Make friends with someone better than you and fight him in an empty server. The fastest way to learn is to get beat. Take some time to discuss why you got killed, and keep trying new solutions.

  • If you are using a 2 hander, play with swords first so you learn how to delay and/or accelerate attacks, as it is easiest to do, and has the most effect, with swords. Don’t use shield as it will force you to learn the bullshit animations in the game to be able to block things effectively.

If people are looking down, they can overhead attack you almost instantly, so watch out for that, especially for a vangaurd doing it.

    Bada you sassy fuck.

  • I would start playing as a Vanguard.

-Use spears to learn to aim stabs as mentioned.
-Use the Greatsword to learn “normal” combo fighting.
-Take an Axe as a secondary and throwing Knifes ( if your aim gets better take the throwing Hatchets)
-Play the Tutorial if you haven’t yet.
-Use kicks against enemies with shields to break the blocks.
