Framerate issue since July 4th hotfix

  • My game used to run great but right after the hotfix on July 4th I’ve been having frame rate issues. I swear it is the hotfix because I had changed nothing on my end around the time the issue appeared. It usually occurs during combat, many enemies in sight, and/or an expansive view. I posted a video on YouTube of the issue happening.
    f2k-XcwES6g
You’ll notice that the stat unit points to the GPUs being the issue, but how so? You’ll also notice that the second GPU is only at 40% usage. So what’s the deal?

I’m using an FX-6350 CPU clocked at 4.6 Ghz, and for the GPUs I have two 7850s 2Gb editions running in crossfire with stress-tested stable overclocks. I tried reinstalling the latest video drivers and even reinstalling Chivalry, but it hasn’t helped.

  • I notice so many people with issues when they use Crossfire/Sli in various games. It isn’t particularly stable it seems. Factor that in with it rarely being cost effect over getting 1 stronger card (if you getting the best in the market, you don’t need two lol).

As for you issue, I don’t know. It is probably your O/S + Hardware issue, when the game patches it can reset stuff occasionally. Like this other poor fellow who was running his 670M fine, after patch his computer decided Chivalry really needs the HD4000 piece of evil.

  • But this issue has stemmed recently! My game used to run great I swear. Dual GPU technology has been around since 2005 for fucks sake, and UE3 supports it. Most games I play use both GPUs extensively and efficiently if needed. For example, the new Tomb Raider game had both of my GPUs at 98% though almost the whole game.

  • Developer

AMD doesn’t have a Crossfire profile for our game.

  • Well crossfire obviously works to some degree, but a CF profile for Chivalry would make it run better yes? Can they be requested? Have you requested one, or will you?
In doing some research I found out they just made an application profile for Natural Selection 2. If that game can get a profile I see no reason why Chivalry could not.

  • I saw this over on Toms Hardware

O.K., so I finally broke down and created a user ID after all these years viewing TH.com as a visitor, just for this thread. I think you have misunderstood a minor detail that is causing your false reading. - when you are playing a game (in full screen) X-fire is enabled. - when you alt-tab out, X-fire is disabled. (at a rate far faster than we humans comprehend). GPU-Z is showing you what’s going on right now, on this display. (which isn’t in X-fire mode, because it’s not in fullscreen, because you are viewing GPU-Z). You must use a program like “Afterburner” (ATI/nVidea) or “EVGA Precision” (nVidea) that have time graphs, to see the GPU loads for the last minute or so. (back when you were still X-fired in fullscreen). ;)

  • Did you even read and watch my original post? I have Chivalry running on my main monitor (in full screen) and on my second screen I have a GPU and CPU monitor that I pan the camera to.

  • Gess, no need to be so aggressive. If you read up on Crossfire you will find that it is common that with xfire the 2nd GPU isn’t utilized as much as the first, the average seems to be about 65%.

There is also talk that it may be better off if you disable 1 card.

  • Trust me, you can run this game just fine on a single 7850.

Even with my Phenom, the 7850 still pushes more than 50 frames. It’s not perfect, but it works.

  • Although, while we’re all on the topic of crossfired Radeon 7850’s; Gref, how is the performance of two 7850’s working together? I’ve been curious for some time now, but have been unable to get an actual user’s opinion.

  • What was your standard frame rate prior to the update? Did it change any graphical settings in chivalry?

Also, have you tried disabling crossfire to see if that helps?

  • @The:

What was your standard frame rate prior to the update? Did it change any graphical settings in chivalry?

Yeah the update maxed out all the graphics settings. There wasn’t much in a change of look just a massive drop in FPS which makes my GPU suffer cardiac arrest. Had to change them Back down to a mixture of low, medium and high.

  • I’m also wondering if the patch caused some sort of performance issue on some cards / configurations or with certain drivers. I’m on a gtx 770 and an overclocked 2500k, this game should be chewed up raw without a sweat. My frame rate is fine, it’s just that I get a lot of minor stuttering that becomes obnoxious. I don’t know if it’s related to the patch, but chivalry is the only game I’ve played that’s given me any sort of issue.

It’s still playable, but it feels off.

  • I contacted AMD and this was the response I received:
I have forwarded this request on to the driver team, but to ensure that it is dealt with quickly, we kindly ask that you go to http://www.amd.com/betareport and fill out a bug report for this game, as it will help the driver team to obtain the necessary information from your system to reproduce and ultimately resolve this issue. They won’t e-mail back, but continue to check the CAPs page to see the latest games added to the Profiles, so that when Chivalry is added, you can install it to get that performance increase that you are looking for. Thank you for contacting AMD!

I have to say that I am quite pleased with this response. :D

For every game except Chivalry it’s freaking awesome I love it! Crossfire has been around since 2005 so developers are now pretty accustomed to it. When Xfire first came out the performance gain of a second card was about 10% at most, nowadays it’s usually >90%.
Here’s a video of me running the Tomb Raider benchmark, everything is maxed out except AA; I’m running FXAA instead of SSAA. This game runs my Xfire setup so well! Notice how both GPUs are at >90% load throughout the benchmark.

    @The:

On max settings my FPS was never below 50 before, wish I had some hard evidence of it. =/
Even when I turn down the game settings it’s still really bad, I’m flabbergasted by how poorly this game runs considering the hardware I have. Running only a single card didn’t help either.

  • Is your framerate roughly the same with just one card?

It seems to me that something in the hotfix must have disabled the second card from being used much at all, essentially throwing a wrench in the crossfire platform.

Did you recently update your drivers too? If so, try rolling back to the older version.

  • The game doesn’t hardly run at all with one card.
Something in this hotfix completely broke the game on my PC.
I’ve tried reinstalling the latest drivers and I’ve tried the latest beta drivers, but to no avail.
I’m so desperate to get it working better I’m about to reformat my HDD and do a fresh install of windows; probably wouldn’t even help…… :(
Because as you can see Tomb Raider runs great I made that video today, and many other games run well too.

  • Yes, Chivalry is very strange. If you can run Tomb raider like that, Chivalry should be nothing…

If you made no other changes to your PC, I can’t imagine it’s anything else than some odd issue in the patch.
