Samurai: it's "kenjutsu", not "kendo"!

  • Hello! First of all, I’m really excited about this upcoming expansion. Particularly about the samurai! 8-)

However, I have an axe to grind when it comes to your use of “kendo” in the current samurai description (“known for their skill in Bushido and Kendo”).

Please note that “kendo” is a relatively modern sport practiced with bamboo weapons representing swords (called shinai). It has arguably nothing to do with the samurai. An easy mistake to make, as “the way of the sword” sounds relevant in the context… But I assure you it is not.

The word you are looking for in relation to traditional Japanese swordsmanship practiced by the samurai is “kenjutsu”.

I hope you find it in your hearts to correct the description. Keep up the great work!

  • If you keep kendo in your samurai description, then the next announcement may as well be something along these lines:

“VIKINGS: The disciplined seafaring Norsemen known for their skill in Raping and Pillaging…”

  • That is sort of what vikings are known for. But unlike kendo, raping and pillaging is an ancient sport.

  • Chivalry/Spike TV’s deadliest warrior… Historically EFFED! … This is news.

  • Yep, Kendo has no place in C:DW. Japanese ‘medieval’ weapons are generally made of/with metal (the swords in particular). It would be a BIG BIG BIG mistake to involve anything to do with kendo in anyway shape or form! If you do need any information on the topic you’re better off asking a Ninjutsu specialist as they’re trained in the use of weapons (including but not limited to Japanese swords), not bamboo sticks.

  • Now that we know that ninjas will also appear in Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior (source), I guess they can either correct “kendo” to “kenjutsu” or get it wrong twice. :P

So pretty much par for the course for TB.

How dare you sir! They’ve only had 20 days to read this. Who has that kind of time these days? On the bright side, I think the offending samurai blurb has been replaced with a blurb about knights.

  • Yeah the Vikings weren’t brutish! :( They traded with people as far as Asia and Persia. They were the only Medieval European fighters who used forged crucible steel (much higher quality steel). They also had a lot of knowledge about navigation.

    ^this.

Also, rape in Viking culture would fall under a property violation, so rape was never cool in their society.

They also discovered Vinland before anyone else. Excepting, of course, the natives.

  • Yah, vikings were a cool bunch! :D Did you know that women in viking society actually had quite some freedom and rights? And that men often combed, washed and braided their hair/beards? Their name for “saturday” meant “washing day”. Does that sound brutish?
