Spartan ideas

  • Is there any little chance that we will be able to hold our javelins like this, in the shield hand?

  • Also, is there any chance in the future that we might get a to put a leather cuirass on our spartan instead of a bronze one?

Would be very cool, thank you!

That’s actually several layers of linen glued together.

Wow, I seem to be dropping Nikolas Lloyd links all the time to answer stuff for me that I don’t feel like typing xD

Given that he’s an archaeologist, I think he at least have some credibility.
    He does say “I think”.

Nonetheless, I want to wear it.

  • Well, he might not like that theory but it’s a widely held held theory in classical archeology. He might be right, however his theory of leather has the same problems: there are no written references or archeological finds to support leather so it’s all theory.

My theory is… leather seems easier to get by and work with!

As he said, you need vast fields to grow linen. Then sew the fabric and then glue 20 layers of it together with a glue that is not water resistant! :P well, that’s what the wikipedia said that you linked.

  • Know what would be cool? If the Spartan got to use the sling, and then choose not to wear a helmet or a bronze cuirass and you’d truly look like a Greek slinger!

Now who’s with me? I know Slygoat is!

  • Well actually all roman legionaries Had a sling with lead rounds. It was standard equipment most people didn’t know about. They used it with their big shield and fully armoured on the defence.

And that second image is actually a Balearic slinger. He’s got another sling around his head. Used by the Carthaginians and the Romans as mercenaries and auxiliaries.

  • Oh come on, all slingers looked about the same, it doesn’t matter that he’s from spain. Slings existed in all of the world, so it’s kind of hard when I try to google for slingers and can only find a few good pictures. Doesn’t matter, they all looked the same around the mediterranean. The regular slinger all wore a simple tunic for mobility since they are skirmishers and don’t benefit from armour (and because there’s always a nice weather down there, they wanted to get their tan on), and often wearing a spare sling around their head. And a sack of rocks. It’s not a complicated set of gear.

And I don’t think roman legionaries used slings themselves. Most likely they had mercenaries for that sort of deal that specialised in it, like the balearic you mentioned for example. Maybe looked like this with a roman shield and dagger, too. Not much armour there, not a good idea when you want to run in and run back with your sling. Roman legionaries had half a dozen throwable lead darts with them, clipped to the back of their shields. But here you go, roman slinger, only guy in armour I found.

Why are the only people who are commenting on these ideas just nitpicking at potential historical inaccuracies I might have said? I just want to be able to wear a different cuirass and have the option to use a sling, but no, because my pictures are wrong!

    Edit:
All the pictures I can find of slingers, everyone dresses the same

  • Here are examples I made of what I think we should be able to wear instead of bronze and just being bare chested. Behold awesome photoshop skills (it’s actually Gimp.)

  • Looks good :D

Thanks! Now I hope the Torn Banner devs at least has or will consider adding this! The armour part that is, but I wouldn’t mind if they added the other ideas as well (using slings, holding javelins in shield hand)

It kind of annoys me how a lot of people in testing who play as Spartans choose to do so bare chested, like if they are trying to immitate some kind of homoerotic hollywood fantasy version of an historical event that took place in greece long ago. 300 has good action scenes but their lack of any type of clothing except leather boxers and a cape really annoys me.
