Micro-stuttering/jump in-game

  • Introduction

Hello TBS and fellow gamer to my inaugural post! I would first off like to say I enjoy your game TBS very much ever since it was first released on steam (bought it the very first day) and has since then sunk many hours into the game. To my fellow gamer I say thank you for the competition. I have also put many hours into playing around with the .ini files to increase performance (usually with great success). All niceties aside I’ve been getting this stuttering in-game and I just can’t seem to fix it.

    Disclaimer

To clarify before I go any further, I do check forums for any possible solutions so as not to bug anyone and I think I have exhausted the technical support forum.

    The Problem

The stuttering in-game is different from what a few people have been experiencing, it lasts less than a second and occurs periodically every five to ten seconds. It causes my player to jump forward a couple of feet (impaling me usually into another sword) as if I were teleporting. I have noticed no drop in FPS during these events, rise in usages or temperatures during these events. I emphasize that this happens only to my player character and everyone else on the server seems to be moving/playing smoothly. In fact, everything plays smoothly, including my player and everyone else’s during multiplay with the exclusion being the micro-stutter/jump.

It’s an oddity for sure because I have asked other players if they have noticed my stuttering/jumping and they tell me they have not. But they tell me they are experiencing something similar. Now this has some affect on my game play, but I can get along with it when I account for it during play. I should note that this happens only in multiplayer servers and I haven’t noticed it during LAN games.

    Solutions I have tried

    UDKEngine.ini
    1. bSmoothFrameRate=False (under [Engine.Engine] and [UnrealEd.EditorEngine]
    2. bUseTextureStreaming=True (tried false as well)
    3. BUseBackgroundLevelStreaming=True (tried false as well)

    UDKSettings.ini
    1. bEnableVignette=False (to increase FPS)

    UDKSystemSettings.ini
    1. DynamicLights=False
    2. DynamicShadows=False
    3. MotionBlur=False
    4. DepthOfField=False
    5. AmbientOcclusion=False
    6. Bloom=False
    7. LensFlare=False
    8. OneFrameThreadLag=False (also tried true, did not help)
    9. UseVsync=False (also forced by NVIDIA Settings to off)

    NVIDIA Settings (added as UDK)
    1. to use GPU
    2. Prefer maximum performance
    3. Vertical sync off

    Steam
    1. Check Game Integrity (to play game with vanilla .ini)
    2. Opt-out of Beta’s for Chivalry

    NVIDIA Inspector
    1. Over-clocking my GPU
    2. Checking during game play that my GPU isn’t throttled (wasn’t)
    3 Temperature average during play, 55-65 *C

    CPU-Z
    1. CPU isn’t throttled

    Computer
    1. Setting UDK to have ‘high priority’
    2. Chkdsk (no bad sectors or problems)
    3. Cleaning all temp files for efficiency (CCleaner)
    4. Made sure fans are clear and clean

    Conclusion

In summary, I have tweaked everything I know to get the best performance out of the game and I always maintain a solid 60+ FPS on very large servers and a 90+ FPS on small servers, and have never noticed in stats any choke on behalf of my PC or through any other program. Thank you TBS for this great game and thank you fellow gamer for great competition and support of this game!

  • Hello there!
While my answers might not solve your underlying problem, I’m still willing to give it a try as occasional stuttering
is quick to ruin any good experience - and I know how annoying it can be!

Let’s look at some of the possible issues and solutions.

    1) The Network Adapter
You mentioned that the stuttering “only” occurs in multiplayer,
which is why I’m lead to believe that the culprit is the On-Board NIC .

In seldom cases, the NIC can suffer from overflow issues.
Although it is rare I’ve mention it first since it has a rather easy fix.

    (if i remember correctly)
The problem occurs because the CPU has received an Interrupt from the NIC,
while the NIC is exhausted (mostly due to a lot of simultaneous connection)
    it just won’t respond quickly enough which results in one of the CPU cores “freezing”;
and can be experienced as occasional stutter.

To test this out, all you have to do is to switch from Wireless to Wired, or from Wired to Wireless.
If you are on a Wired connection, try out Wireless or vice-versa.

    2) Background Services
Games such as Battlefield 4 Beta got quite a lot of critic because of occasional stuttering,
the entire problem was their game-launcher - which opened up a Flash-based Webpage.
The flash-plugin it self was the reason so many people experienced stuttering,
to fix this issue users had to download something called Process Explorer and
    Suspend the browser/flash-plugin.

The easiest way to test this out is to ensure that NO browser is running
in the background while playing the game.

If you continue to have problems, you can try out Blackviper’s solutions to
disable any service which are not required to run Windows.
    http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/

I sincerely hope that either of the solutions worked for you, if not, there are still a lot of other possible solutions - so fear not, it is fixable.

  • this happens to pretty much everyone i know… it’s not just you.

  • Thank you for the lightening fast reply.

I have looked into all the things you have suggested, and boy did I ever go off course (in a good, Wikipedia link jump kind of way). The good news, I do not have the Conficker worm. I have gone through all the services that I require for my daily transactions and eliminated the ones I do not need or want. Before I had done this for computer speed, but I had only memory at the time and was unsure of some services. The black viper link was excellent, thank you.

I have also shut off some window features, namely: games, and Microsoft windows media center (the devil). I had also previously gone into this, but apparently missed those, haha! All this computer work also reminded me to check my hosts file and see if maybe I was barring something, but the hosts file is vanilla. I have also checked my network adapters (wired and wireless) for conflicts and there seems to be no problem. However, I cannot test your method yet because I live in a complex where I have no access to the router for me to be wired to–I’ll have to wait til I head back home.

Lastly, the browser I did check was completely closed and all branches related but unfortunately did not solve the problem. I think once we figure out this odd stuttering it would be a great service to share with the Chivalry enthusiasts. Thanks again for the resources.

Thanks for your input, Bigsby but if I may put to you:

    @Sovereign:

  • i compared it to being on a school bus with a cd player without shock protectino, and you’re sitting in the back seat. Most every server i go into in DW skips around every few second. It’s like micro-stutters. And you may not have heard from others about it happening to them, and maybe they don’t even notice but i’ve played with a ton of people and every time i’m like did you guys just skip or are you skipping around… they say yes.

  • I too am a tweak monster and I have posted almost every tweak and optimization program and tricks I could find. My latest post is here and it is quite dramatic in increased FPS. viewtopic.php?f=69&t=24097

However, I still have not managed to totally remove the micro stutter. I also go to other game sites that use the UDK engine and look through and test their tweaks. My new configs are a combination from many sites.

There is also the HiAlgoBoost for Skyrim that I have been trying to get them to port their optimizer/booster for Chiv since they have had great success with tweaking the engine so that you can actually get great gfx and still keep settings on high or in upper levels. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=24101

So if more people hit them up on facebook requesting it they may do it.

  • shouldn’t have to do all that tweaking for a game to run smoothly. I don’t have to tweak anything on MW… or any other game for that matter to have it not stutter around every 10 seconds, that shouldn’t be the gamer’s responsibility to ‘tweak’ the game so that it works correctly on a beast mode machine that should handle it fine and a superb internet connection.

Sad but true, you shouldn’t have to tweak any game to get a decent performance out of. The idea or excuse of get better hardware just frustrates so many of us when other games with the same engine run just fine.

  • Thank you for clarifying your statement, Bigsby. I apologize if I had come off jaded towards you. Yes in essence the stutter is similar to a CD player skip even to the extent that it is only happening to me while the bus rolls on regardless of my CD skip. It’s a funny analogy. You are right, that we shouldn’t have to tweak or write code just to get decent performance on a good rig.

Retsnom, I have looked into the HiAlgoBoost. It looks like a great product, but I can safely say my FPS I am more than happy with. I will look into it for other games that I wouldn’t mind to have some shading on! I have also looked into your tweak threads and they are great, thank you. I wish only that you could permanently toggle fog off; I noticed a good +30 FPS increase from this.

I understand that it could give archers a great view, but the FPS increase would be invaluable for so many! I think perhaps just for the sake of trying (going for that gold star) I may swap with your config files to see if there is any difference.

  • Both myself and my room mate suffer from the same problem. I’d guess it’s a router setting or internet problem due to packet loss but I get roughly 70 mb/s down and 6 mb/s up and don’t have this problem with any other game I play online, and I play some pretty high powered games. My machine is pretty beefy as well. Frame rate is good, and the game runs smooth for 10-20 seconds between each stutter.

It’s not a completely game breaking problem. Small jumps now and again. Worse some days then others. Happens on every server I play on, even local servers I get 40 or so ping with. It’s exclusive to multi player.

  • After reading and rereading the posts in this thread I’m going to assume everyone is suffering brief, yet massive FPS drops which could give the illusion of warping ahead or skipping, I guess. I have experienced the former but never saw any form of teleporting or sudden charges forward.

In my case Steam would, for under a second, spike to some absurdly high CPU usage above chivalry. Further investigating with latency monitor revealed, as someone speculated, my computer’s ethernet driver was causing massive DPC latency spikes (which could cause audio looping, freezing, stutters, among other things). I never saw these hiccups at launch so I knew, contrary to what everyone says on these forums, it was not my computer. Watching steam in task manager while playing chivalry revealed steam sporadically surpassing chivalry in terms of CPU usage and increasing its memory usage tenfold.

I managed to completely remove my stutters by allowing two games, which I haven’t played in a long while, to update. I was previously telling them to pause every time I launched steam because never would I have thought not downloading something would cause such a performance drop.

If steam is not the problem in your case I’d say something else is acting in a similar manner, assuming you are not experiencing these problems everywhere, even not in a game. With steam offline, I managed to get windows update to shoot up to 200k mem usage while starting a game with bots and, sure enough, a pause occurred. I’d look at anything that has an updater, periodically spikes in CPU/mem usage, or has a reason to connect to the internet randomly, like an online backup or itunes.

  • Steam has always been a little buggy and take up a lot of resources. BUt you can minimize steams usage by making sure the main window is minimized. You can also lower the CPU priority of Steam as well but sometimes it will make Steam close. So you will have to test it.

If you run steam in offline mode you cannot load some games nor can you play online.

My problems are with the micro stuttering of player models, most all weapons will stutter as well and scenery. I almost always have my FPS showing and there is no drop in fps when the stuttering occurs. It just stutters. I have tried tweaking the mouse and imputs settings, lowering mouse dpi and everything yet I have not found a fix.

My frame rate is fine, hasn’t ever dropped. It acts like more of a slight lag if anything, but I don’t have this problem with other games, and all appropriate ports are open.

I tried this out to be sure and it didn’t correct the issue.
