Sharing Current Tactics

  • I figure this would be a good place for us to share our tactics as we develop our skills in this game. I would like to see the combat evolve in this game like MW from the beginning to the point it is now.

My current class is Viking. I use the 2 handed hammer as my primary and the 2 handed ax as my secondary.

Why two two handers? Because with the viking you can throw your 2 hander if you wish. The two handed hit on throw on either of these weapons is devastating. So I can throw my hammer and then pull out my 2 handed ax.

I’ve been throwing the hammer at pirates and ninja’s and switching to the Axe to deal with them. Then for knights or samurais I throw my ax and use the hammer, since they are slower and it has high damage.

Ive been using these tactics often. Engage slash spam a bit, back up and throw. It’s unblockable and you can run over and pick up your weapon. I’ve gotten as many as 3 or 4 throw kills in a single life.

It’s really powerful, its like being a vanguard with a better throwing item that’s easy to see to pick up, powerful and doesn’t require you to switch weapons and be unable to block at range.

  • Ninja tips:

#1: The stab on the Ninjato can be dragged very effectively around parries and shields if you drag it around to the left side.

#2: Use the roll only when you need a quick burst of speed to get away from or initiate something. Also you can actually control the direction of the roll using your mouse during the roll. With this you can roll 180 degrees around opponents.

#3: Get good with Shuriken. Shuriken are quite underrated, but can be a powerhouse if you can land them consistently.

#4: Use the overhead on the Ninja’s weapons a lot. They do the most damage, and can be dragged around parries and shields with good footwork.

#5: Learn to target switch. The Ninja is arguably the best class at target switching because of his speed. Move from one target to another using different attacks, feints, rolls, anything and everything. I’ve personally won a 1v5 with the Ninja before.

#6: Pick a single primary weapon and use only that one weapon. Because of the very fast pace of DW, and the lack of parry-in-recovery, learning the timings and speeds of your weapon is even more important than it was in MW. This tip applies to all classes.

  • Get a long reaching weapon and LMB Spam.
It’s sad, but way to effective.

  • Don’t underestimate the alt overhead of the Japanese swords. It’s a diagonal attack from bottom left to top right, and if you run to the right of an enemy it’s a fantastic strike that they often don’t see coming. It also covers a lot of horizontal space while still having the power of an overhead.

  • Awesome I did not know that about the Samurai sword. I am going to play around with that.

  • @Korgawrath:

Awesome I did not know that about the Samurai sword. I am going to play around with that.

I’d say it’s even better with the ninjato, the ninja can move to a side position and strike from the odd angle VERY quickly. And with the increased overhead damage ninja get, it packs a punch.

  • Heres my tactic with samurai, katana only
    1-switch to fists (optional)
    2-sprint to enemy, battlecry
3-bow before fighting another samurai, ninja or spartan, fuck pirates and vikings
4-make first hit while unsheating (optional)
5-use lots of overhead, alt-overhead, mouse dragging on lmb for early hits
6-die with honor because youre still a noob
7-if you somehow win & it was a good fight, show your respect by bow & audio command thingy, laugh when killing vikings or pirates
8-repeat until youre good in it

with pirates and vikings i mean those using dualweilding, guns or throw spamming you.

  • What about ninja using Bo Staff?

  • samurai - equip yari spear and yumi, gg.

    viking - equip spear, gg.

spartans, use short spear… overhead combo and throw spears. Same HTK on most if not all classes, but you have 6 spears to throw instead of 1, overhead overhead overhead, but be sure to throw spears and pick them up when you throw… gg.

    ninja - equip bo-staff… gg

knight - sow or flange - gg

    pirate - shoot shit

  • You really do hate spears and ranged.

  • lemon, i MAINED the spear as my first weapon… why would i hate them? you know nothing. i JUST SAID… from USING THEM… i consider them OP.

Moderator Edit: Please don’t insult others. I use every class and every weapon… the fucking spears are OVERPOWERED… this comes from EXPERIENCE, not from reading others forum posts like you.

mr over 4000 posts, stop trying to tell people how to play or what in the game is correct or not correct and giving shitty strategy. If you played me in game i’d wreck you hard so don’t try and think you know me, how i play or anything like that. I dont know how many times i’ve said to you the spear was one of my first weapons and i still use it all the fucking time.

Bo Staff was nerfed in Beta Patch 4… I think. Ninjato 4 lyfe anyway.

  • i close my eyes and start lmb spam.
Anyway i find the Yari spear a great weapon, not beacause is op,but because i can engage a fight without being tked by my allies, also i can keep the enemy off the distance.

  • “i close my eyes and start lmb spam.”

    Sums up DW.

  • If you are capable of clicking on a desktop icon play a pirate use the rail pistol to snipe people at 5 miles range. or the shotgun to kill anyone below full health at close range.

Play ninja. run into people look at their knees as you scoot round em and spam any combo you want. odds are they wont be able to block but if they have a shield or amazing luck just start tap forward rather than holding it down . ninjas dont make a sound when they attack so it looks like the start of one. once you draw the parry start your combo for a free kill. oh never take your finger off sprint.

play a viking use your 5 ft wide shuri-caanon to take half their life away and get an easy kill each time if you jump or change speeds it masks the throwing animation making it impossible to see.

congratulations on believing there’s no competitive side of this game, and as for getting upset, yes lemon gets under my skin because he’s Moderator Edit: Please don’t insult others.

  • Back onto the topic of tactics, here’s mine for each class.

Viking: Take two swords for melee ranged, throw shield before every single fight ever - the damage on a headshot with the shield is ridiculous, and it’s quite possibly the best ranged weapon in the game. Sometimes I run hatchets just for the extra throwing weapons, though they don’t quite match the shield in ease of landing a hit - 50m exploding headshots with the shield are more satisfying than internet flamewars.

I’ve played with the two-handers and find dual-wielding general suits my playstyle better, unless I’m running in a mob. Between the old stand-bys of ducking, judging weapon range, and feints, I can handle a one-on-one against any unshielded class. Against shields, while charged kicks can be effective, the difficulty of getting in proper position for one when dealing with DW’s increased movespeed makes it a niche tactic for me. Against shielded opponents, LMB and ALT-LMB dragging combined with facehugging seems to do the trick.

Against mobs, if I can’t find a place to make them line up (or they have spears and aren’t n00bz), I like to do a good shield-throw followed by some run-through LMBs. As always, when fighting mobs, it’s all about footwork and luck.

Samurai: I love having the katana available if only for the surprise iai strike on the draw. Serviceable weapon otherwise, no real complaints. Yari is a nice compliment, though the bow is better suited to some maps - I find all the other weapons somewhat limited or situational. Overall, I think the best tactics I’ve run across for 1v1 fights is to pull out the bow, engaging feelings of rage in my opponents, since everyone hates ranged weapons - once they’re close enough, a bit of footwork and an iai strike from the katana often lets me take control of a fight from the start.

Against shields, LMB drags and jumping overheads are still approximately as effective with swords as they were in MW, though the timings are much different.

Against mobs? Normally I’d advise running away, especially if they’re shielded mobs - but samurai don’t run, so I die with honour.

Spartans: Dory and falcata, without exception; the instant-kill against some of the weaker classes (and some of the stronger ones with headshots) makes the dory an unparalleled choice for starting off a fight, preferably from a flanking position. The falcata has some nice, familiar hitboxes and is great for taking heads. While the shield isn’t foolproof, it DOES have an exceptional block radius; never forget your footwork, this is what really makes Spartans powerful - they’re so fast for their armour and gear compliment.

Against shields, always remember that your shield is better than theirs.

Against mobs, run to where the terrain favours you - get to a hill where you can get under them a little, both for ducks and for dragging behind parries. Hallways are always fun, since your spears will almost always control the fight.

Knights: I don’t think I need to bother with this one - good footwork, good timing, and the ability to hit-trade like a complete n00b will win you almost every fight.

Ninja: If you’re a n00b, you could run the bo staff and rely on deceptive hit animations and speed to overwhelm anyone in a one-on-one fight. But I prefer the ninjato for the sheer badassery. Always try to fight from a lower elevation than your opponent; the combat rolls are great, but LMB-spam at chest height still seems to hit me a lot, so the extra space helps a lot. No matter who you’re fighting, never be afraid to run away and come back when they’re occupied - silent footsteps really makes flanking great for these guys.

Against shields, 180-degree rolls around your opponent are decent, as is dragging on the LMB and jumping-overheads, all as per usual.

Against mobs is where the ninja really seems to shine. No other class seems to have the same LMB-runthrough potential, their speed helping a lot in positioning so your opponents tangle with each other. Metsubushi have some potential here, as do smoke bombs. I normally hate this tactic, but LMB-target switching works amazingly well for this class. Don’t forget the alt-strikes.

Pirate: Now here’s a dirty class. Guns, firepots, any somewhat unexpected speed. Whether it’s due to hitboxes or skill, I seem to have a lot of issue making ducks work for these guys. My primary tactics involve using guns to make people very angry, and then letting them run out of stamina while I parry like mad. Starting with a sword and saving the pistol for a mid-fight surprise also has its uses.

Against shields, I run a lot. The old n00b vanguard strat of running away and then turning 180 degrees with a big LMB, while dirty and deplorable, seems to work against angry, over-eager opponents.

Against mobs, holding your pistol out is useful for baiting out their throwing weapons or breaking their formations - if they don’t run for cover, chances are they’ll all start zig-zagging and get in each other’s way. Unless you’re backed up by a lot of allies, there isn’t much hope here - LMB spam and pray, or try to find good terrain. Don’t be afraid to run away if the opportunity presents, maybe try to get a lucky pistol headshot on your way out.
