SOMA

Created by Frictional Games, the same people who made the Penumbra series and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Supposed to be released 2015. Looks creepy as all hell.

  • It does look good

  • Am excite.

  • Noticed this a while ago, then forgot all about it.

Frictional Games is an excellent company when it comes to making Horror Survival games(no game matches Amnesia), but they often have an annoying lack of actual gameplay footage before the title is released.

The trailer they have released now is decent, but honestly I just want to see the hiding mechanic in action, or at least some footage of the enemies I’ll be running from.

Guy kind of describes the gameplay a bit, I think he mentions enemies briefly.

Outlast is pretty creepy as well, and The Evil Within looks fuckin terrifying lol.

  • “What I played of their game is better described as tense rather than scary.”
Nice. Stress-horror is best horror. And at least this game is actually developed by Frictional Games. A machine for pigs was nothing short of pig feces.
I just hope they do a better job with enemies in general, as soon as you figured out how stupid the monsters in Amnesia were, the game ceased to be engaging.

    @Oy:

The Evil Within looks fuckin terrifying lol.

Kinda looks like it can end up becoming RE4 2, which I’d love. That game’s awesome.
I just hope they remove stupid shit like pushing the analogue stick to survive rotating blades. (Which half the gameplay footage has been so far) In RE4 they at least has the decency to make you tap a button repeatedly when a boulder is rolling behind you, lol.

  • I hope the game still has escape / hiding segments. And creatures that can also be neutral instead of hostile.

I want to see some swimsuit guy chasing you being all scary and stuff, but he’s actually friendly. If he catches up to you, he’ll plead for help and then collapse as parasite worms crawl out of him. Might make you feel guilty after being wholly terrified.

  • Outlast wasn’t really that scary to me.
Started pretty good, but eventually it started to seem like the developers made the same enemy appear over and over again so often that they actually wanted the player not to be frightened by them anymore.

What I dearly hope for SOMA is that Frictional Games emphasizes on the “unknown” horror effect. It’s pretty god damn scary, this massive blue/green world deep below the surface. Just like Chris Walker in Outlast and The Shadow in Amnesia, I hope this game also features 1 much more dangerous enemy apart from the usual. I’m guessing the typical enemy to avoid will be robots in SOMA, so I really hope the ocean itself has one hell of a mutant aquatic creature.

  • The Evil Within - Asylum action horror

    SOMA - Underwater stress/tense horror

Routine - retrovision of the future horror

Looks like the horror genre is being reborn? Now if only we could get a proper Silent Hill reboot that captured what made SH2 / 3 so good.

  • I think the horror genre needs something fresh to it, these “survival adventure horror” are getting old pretty quickly, outlast stopped being scary after the first monster appeard, but it was still a good game

i think this might become a pretty scary game with oculus rift especially, its open world survival like minecraft

  • That Forest game looks like it has potential. If it has good co-op, at any rate.

  • Co-op would mean the drop of scary level, although it could have potential if getting separated would be easy or if things could fuck with your vision and make you see your partner as an enemy :D

  • The Forest would look pretty kewl to me if it wasn’t just survival.

  • IMHO horror doesn’t work that well if you can fight back.

  • It does if fighting back isn’t enough.
