Can someone write up a guide on hosting a server?

  • I’m following the guide that’s in one of the thread, and put the launch option command.

I can’t see my server on the server browser, and I don’t know what my ip address for the server is.

  • ARe you running the server on your own computer or a dedicated server?

  • @b3h47pte:

    My own computer

  • If you want to connect to your own computer you could do
    open 127.0.0.1

I’m not quite sure what the deal is with it not showing up on the server browser though. I’d have to look into it.

  • using open 127.0.0.1 let me connect to my server.

but my server is still not showing up.

what’s that talk about port number being unique in the guide?

do I also need to open up some ports in the router? (port forwarding)

how do i know what the ip address of my server is? (i was just typing bunch of stuff and 192.168.2.4 let me connect to my server)

  • 192.168 specifies your local address behind your router. Your IP address to the server will be your actual IP. http://www.whatismyip.com/

  • @Guitar:

That’s strange, because when I set up the server and press TAB, the ip address shown on the top right of the score board is completely different from the ip address displayed from the ipwebsite.

  • Steamsockets causes the IP to be different. Can’t really rely on that value in the scoreboard. That value is going to be phased out of the scoreboard sooner or later to become the actual server name.
