Vanguards and the Maul

  • So I love the Maul, it’s got so much force behind each swing.

Obviously it’s not the best weapon for duels but I have had some success, being as slow as it is the best way I find to kill people is to draw them into an attack that will miss and follow up with THE MIGHT OF THOR!(Overhead swing)

Problem is, to do this I need better or similar reach to the opponent, what should I do against vanguards? I’ve tried feinting but the speed of the hammer makes it unreliable. Delaying a horizontal attack seems to work but in the middle of a fight with multiple people it’s not wise to use the horizontal attack.

Maybe I could get close and jump into an overhead swing and hope they don’t block up.

  • I think you’re better off doing a combination of blocking, getting in close, kicking, and stabbing with the hammer.

  • Yeah, I guess I’ll have to go back to the basics. Shame I can’t do the mighty overhead swing against them.

I never found a use for kicking people apart from to get some distance, care to explain?

  • Forget kicking, improve your footwork to the point it is nearly impossible to get within your reach without getting atleast a damage trade. Instead of just backpedaling and the likes try to sprint around, specially against 1H wielders that could easily get in your face as your weapon is so slow.

That said, just forget fighting polearms with a maul. They are literally the counter for it. Grab your 1H and fuck them up.

  • Yeah, polearms and spears are all I’m having issues with. I’ll just try my 1H.

  • I knocked a vanguard’s helmet off with an overhead swing. Why did it not kill him? I thought that was a one-hit kill for overhead headshots.

Happened twice in the same game.

  • Here is how you duel with the maul:

When you fight any class, you want to make sure all your hits actually hit the person, parried or not. Because if you whiff you give them a free hit.

If you are fighting an MAA, if you force hm to back dash, then he cant attack you. If he parries, same deal as above.

Basically, just shift sprint at him and react to anything he does, then attack at the right moments when you are in his face.

  • It’s not a one hit on vanguards or knights, archers and MMA = one hit in the head.

Like I said I only have problems against the long reach of vanguards because I can’t dodge an attack and swing before they have the chance to block.

Block their attack then sprint in and swing. Don’t let up.

The overhead does 109 damage to a Vanguard if it hits him in the head, so yes it will one-shot everyone but a knight.

  • I did a video on the Maul

Might help. The best advice I can give is to learn the timings of the weapon down to a T, and know how fast or how slow you can force contact with the weapon. Footwork is a BIG deal, as others have mentioned. You’re trying to create situations where their (Spear, fork, ect) misses while your hammer is coming down on their head.

You can also trade blows easily with a Vanguard, just make sure your swings are out of their windup and you actually connect with them. You can’t do this for ever though, as Vanguard weapons do deal a fair bit of damage.

The jab with the Maul is also useful to throw out every once in a while. It’s the fastest attack you can throw after a parry and comes in useful when your opponent isn’t expecting it. Other than that, you should always be doing overhead swings, the slash is pretty useless unless there’s like 3 guys lined up perfectly in front of you.

  • Axe finds giant hammers to be annoying fight against when compared to previous double axe. 2 shot kills vs 3 shot kills always make for an uphill battle.

Feints are your best friend with any 2-hander.

Also, ion the defensive, and an archer or man at arms is raining blows down… don’t be afraid to man up step into a shot. As soon as his blow lands crank up your overhead. often they will continue the pressure after the first shot lands, its automatic to assume they got a flinch, and they go right into a follow up swing. The trade will be fatal for them.
