I can use some tips/aswers

  • Hello everyone!

I just got this game from the steam sale and as a new player i will appreciate some tips from players who play a bit longer as me. :D

1.How do i know when it’s the right time to use overhead swing/stab/or just slash. Because i played some games and i noticed when i only used slash ( or as they call it “swinging noob or something” ) my score is better as when i’m using overhead all the time. So basically my question is:
When is the right time to use overhead and when do i just need to slash my way trough? Because they seem to do the same amount of damage .( probably not. But looks like it to me )

2.When i was done installing this game i was prepared to join a server. First server i spawned and got teamkilled immediately in the spawn area. It was some sort of gladiator map… It happens alot to me. Some people just seem to want to ruin it for other people…
My question is: Are there servers available with friendly fire off?

3.Is there voicechat available in this game?

I hope you guys can give me some answers on these 3 questions.
    Thanks!

  • 1. Slash (LMB) has moderate damage and is wide, thrust (Mouse wheel up) has lower damage but has more reach and overhead (Mouse wheel down) does more damage but its slower. You can see here all the weapon stats, made by Martin: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc … TZnc#gid=1

2.Probably you were in a FFA server, wich in that case everyone kills everyone. And yes, there will be custom servers where you can turn friendly fire off (I think).

3.There is voicechat, the default key is G.

  • Overhead attacks put hair on your chest! Especially the maul.

  • Sideways attacks with the grand mace are encouraged. Homerun headshots for the win! 8-)

  • Just a small reaction to your slash attack.

    • You hit allies, which especially on TO maps lose you the game. Also a small hit on your score.
    • Slashes are terribly easy to block. This is why I personally use the lmb only for throwing and shooting.
People tend to complain about the lmb spammers as you already stated. However people do not realize that spammers are the most easy prey in the game since they are very predictable. Just time your strike so he will miss and isn’t able to parry when you come in. I am very grateful they exist, since they essentially are free kills
    • slashes take more time in general (especially compared with the stab) and this makes slow weapons even slower. A stab can be executed more quickly (and you are thus able to parry much sooner after a strike) and the overhead does more damage.
    • Slashes are restricted in real-time movement. What I mean by this statement is that stabs and overheads follow your turning and can be steered onto a target until the last few centimeters. As soon as the slash is past the enemy, you have no way of using real-time movement to steer it back on top of the enemy. This makes overheads and stabs much more controllable and deadly until the very last of moment of the attack.

In conclusion, use the slahs attack with axe weapons (since the stab is of course very weak) or against 5 enemies at once, but use stab and overhead for the rest.

  • What attack you do is entirely dependent on the situation.
On top of that, different weapons have different damage/speed/reach with different attack modes. Check the detailed view of a weapon to see.

To better learn all the mechanics of fighting go spend a few evenings playing on duel servers, don’t fight people much much better then you. It would be too hard to learn effectively. Instead fight people that are a bit better then you.

I for instance probably spend about 40-50% stabbing, 30-40% overhead and 20-30% swinging.

Thrusting is probably one of the better ways to attack someone who is running towards you, attack before they do and run forward when you do. Get ready to parry there return hit if they block.

Swings are best used when your opponent will most likely run behind you to your left, although stabbing them and turning your mouse quickly to hit them in the back is also done for that.

A good trick is to use swing but intentionally miss then follow with an overhead or stab. The lesser experienced players will assume you screwed up and missed and come in for a hit, however your combo attack will get them first.

Also most sword overhead attacks start from the top left and go to your bottom right, that is very useful to know and perform when your opponent is likely to run to your right.

Also, don’t miss your attack unless you mean too.

  • First of all thanks all for the answers.

I’ve been playing for ± 5 hours now and i can’t help it but i tried everything alot of times now and i keep going back to the slash only… and if i’m in a fight around teammates i use overhead to not hit everyone in my path. (LOL!)

maybe it just needs some practicing but i think i’ll stick to swing only and sometimes when its crowed an overhead swing. stab doesn’t really work for me at the moment.

But i apprieciate the tips you guys gave me!

Don’t worry chiwhisper you will see while playing the game and practicing that every move is useful and usable. In the beginning I kept swinging like a mad man,but now everything’s different.

Using different moves depends always on what situation you are in to.To make it clearer it depends on:what weapon you use(short, long, slow, fast, heavy etc.),who is your enemy or how many they are and what is his style, where you fight(open field, narrow passage),if there are any teamates around.

Let’s see an example:You are a vanguard with a long greatsword that can inflict good deal of damage with mediorce speed and has long reach. You have to face a knight with a tower shield in a narrow place and obviously you are at a disadvantage. You must not swing your weapon no matter what because the wall will block its way and you can’t really maneuver. You should kick and hit.Try always to keep the knight at distance and don’t get too close.Overhead is the fastest move of a vanguard with greatsword with a fair amount of damage. It’s the best move to do,especially if the knight gets close to you.It may hit him from above even if he defends with his shield(you can try jumping as well).Someone might say that he could switch to the vanguard 1h weapon. But this is a mistake because these weapons inflict little damage and even if you hit a knight you’ll possibly not stop him from attacking or hitting you.A vanguard is not a master at 1h weapons like MaA,he is not so quick. Also it takes some time to switch and you don’t want the knight to start hitting you there.

This is an explanation of a difficult situation but again it depends because you never know.

    Keep practicing!

The way you swing your weapon is totally situational. Overhead is amazing with its appropriate weapon because you can narrow down a strike point, thus avoiding any team damage. Horizontal is great for getting around shields and stab is great for that extra reach.

Hit enemies when they are just about to attack and you can cause them to flinch.

    Press G for voice

Get used to the team killing. Its a significant part of this game and strategy. Playing through these settings will be tough, but you can certainly learn how to play the game properly and accurately.

Sometimes when game types change, your team mates will be confused. Don’t ever take tking seriously :p

Most of all, have fun and welcome to an amazing community

  • Hey bro, I’m quiet the Vanguard Specialist. This little tutorial, and tip session may help you with how I would play him.

  • @johnk17

Great tips! although it seems they are blocking the overhead attacks even as easy as the slash :(

    @ZorisX
Nice info and thanks for the welcome part… Unlike many other game-forums people here are very friendly!

    @yarnu
Great video!! I think my score with swing/slash is only good because there are alot of new players ( rank 1-5 ) that only use slash and don’t block as good as when they play more.

I’m going to try that tecnhiques a.s.a.p. maybe i should also use stab some more :D

EDIT: I tried it and it works like a charm! I play as good as with slash only now and it’s much more fun!!!
I think that concludes this topic. Thank you all for the great information and tips!

    Greetings, Chi-whisper/Jarek
