Flail Weapons



  • Flails, you know–chain weapons. I realize it might be difficult to implement well, but it would be awesome, and I think it would fit the genre and theme as a good way of expanding the weapon variety a bit.

    I’d imagine they could be their own class of weapons rather than another tier within the current classes of weapons–perhaps for the Knight and / or the Vanguard. There could be several variants too.

    Ball and chain
    Mace and chain
    Spiked ball and chain

    The Witch King from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King used this weapon, albeit a rather large and long variant.

    Nice! I figured they had at least considered this by now, but figured I’d throw it out there anyhow. Good to know though. Can’t wait till they get it in game.



  • Flails are confirmed, but we can still speculate on just what kind of flails they’ll be. I find those weird fantasy multi-flails to be almost comical in appearance, but I have to admit swinging one around in-game would make me feel like a badass.

    Obviously there needs to be a two-handed flail as well.

  • flails and such would make a great importunity for a 5th class.
    Some sort of specialist class who uses all kinds of less conventional weapons like flails, maybe even asian imports if there are not enough of them in Europe. Even if that would not be realistic It may still be worth doing.

    The 2 handed flail is basically a tool used by peasants to get the wheat seed out of the crop. Not “chivalrous” if used as weapon. It can be reinforced with iron.

    Main use in war was in the peasant rebellions in early modern germany (“Bauernkriege”).



  • I think it would be cool if you could hold the left button to start spinning it and then use another button to reach out and strike when the ball reaches your front side. It would be efficient against close range but it would be a very tiring weapon.

    But that’s just my thought I’m not sure if this could be good balance wise.

    I’m not sure he means you can hit around a shield from every single angle, just make it easier. As a counter-balance, being blocked could mean a longer recovery time since this is a weapon that need momentum.



  • If this happens I’d love to see it have a sort of ‘charge time’ where you swing it above your head and the more times you spin it around the more damage you do. Works in terms of balance as well because for a more powerful strike you leave yourself unguarded for longer as well.



  • I hope they make it a counter to stupid tower shields. I hate when people hide behind them… I’m looking to kill them and move on, not fight for a few minutes and get ganked by someone else…

    I went through a few games recently and hunted down tower shield users just to throw oil pots on them and run to get another just to repeat the process…

    Tower shields aren’t necessarily for the dueling/fighting part of the game… they play a valuable role in objective mode where you need to defend something at which point you shouldn’t just be able to lawnmower over them with ease.

    I think flails would just take “aim at the tip of the weapon” to the next extreme by making only the ball of the weapon blockable, not the chain. If you block the chain it wraps around your weapon/shield and strikes you.

    To balance this out - simple, flail attacks take more commitment than other weapons. You can’t redirect the momentum of that chain once it’s swinging, after all.

    Unrelated to the above: I’m imagining the flail stab being an underhand whip forward.That would be extremely badass. Not to mention highly useful if flails end up requiring a proper “winding up” to build momentum.
