I’ll be adding more videos here as they come out. Hope the mods don’t mind me posting this in the general forums as well since I did for the last shoutcast.

  • Oh, very nice. I bought this game on the x-mas sales and I was pretty surprised that this game had a competitive scene already. The game came out a couple of months ago.
By the way, do anyone happen to know where I can get information on the competitive scene? Like rules, game modes and such. I’m very interested.

    EDIT:
OK, one criticism here. I’m 9:20 minutes into the video and I’m getting a slight headache. It’s not because you are doing a bad cast or anything. It’s because you move the camera WAY too much. I would highly recommend that instead of flying around, doing small movements with the camera, going in and out, following someone and all that, find a position and stay there. Get into a position where you can see the battle, see what’s going on clearly and stay there until you need to move again. Have a low sensitivity on your mouse so there’s no jerky movements either. Do long, smooth movements with your arm instead of small, stop-n-flick movements with your hand.
In short: If you don’t need to move, don’t move. It’s not nice to look at the camera going up, down, left and right while looking at a dead corpse.

Now, lets watch the rest of this.

    EDIT 2:

From 1:10-2:00, 15:30-16:40, 23:10-23:40, 27:00-27:40 and 32:27-32:30 there’s just a black screen. Some smaller black screen flashes here and there for half a second. It’s not YouTubes fault, I can still see the Dark Age Logo in the right-bottom corner. If this is a Chivalry recording problem, then I apologize for bothering you.

    Lets watch the rest. Again.

    FINAL EDIT:

OK, I watched everything now. Good cast, I enjoyed most of it. But there are some things that you should keep in mind when casting.
    1. Always stay positive. Be hyped like “Yeah, they still have a chance of pushing this cart all the way!” instead of “They may have lost their last chance to push this cart.” This is very nice to listen to and keeps the watcher hyped about the battles and is all around more enjoyable to listen to.
    2. Never say anything about how the game ends. Cast it like this is the first time you’ve seen it and focus on the current events and not on the events that can and/or will happen. If you suddenly say “Yeah, they will not be able to do this push.” right in the middle of it is a 50+ Interesting-Cast-Cancel spell and will dampen the enthusiasm of your watchers a lot.
    3. STOP DOING UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS!
    4. Read 3.
    5. When talking about what class each player is and whatnot, do them at the before and at the start of the round. Viewers want to see the game, not the score screen. You can take it up to check on something like how many are dead or the time of the round, but not more than that unless it’s really necessary. If you have any interesting remarks or comments about a player, go ahead and tell them in between battles. Keeps us something to listen to while we’re waiting for them to spawn.
    6. Read 4.
    7. You have to realize the absolute importance of tip number 6. It’s a godsend.

That is pretty much it. You had a clear voice and knew a good deal about the game, so it was still entertaining to watch. Good cast overall.

Ok wow…I’m very confused as to what caused this. I blame myself for trying to get the video rendered as fast as possible and I apologize. The blackouts are very unprofessional.

    1. Always stay positive. Be hyped like “Yeah, they still have a chance of pushing this cart all the way!” instead of “They may have lost their last chance to push this cart.” This is very nice to listen to and keeps the watcher hyped about the battles and is all around more enjoyable to listen to.

I’m very positive but I’m also going to be honest. That’s my style.

    2. Never say anything about how the game ends. Cast it like this is the first time you’ve seen it and focus on the current events and not on the events that can and/or will happen. This was a live viewing of the game. I had no idea how it was going to end.

    3. STOP DOING UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS!

I did turn the sensitivity on my mouse way down for the shoutcasts. I think I’ve improved my spastic mouse since the first tournament series but I’ll work on improving it further. That being said I will also be one to pan the camera around a lot to get close ups of the constantly moving action. If you can’t deal with that then I’m sorry that my style isn’t for you :)

Well, it’s not really style as it is that you’re moving the camera like you are actually playing the game. Several times during the cast you press the left and right button constantly, making it 1) harder to actually see what you are focusing on and 2) is generally a pain to the eyes to look at. I have no problem that you’re trying to focusing on the action getting close ups, but sometimes it’s a little but too much that most of the fighting is being done outside the camera while you’re looking at a Vanguard getting smashed by an Archer and a MaA. Together with the snap mouse movements and constant pressing on the arrow keys, a lot of the action is missed. I would recommend that you do a full view of the battle every once in a while so that the viewers can see what’s going on.

By the way. Lets talk a little about your style. This game is on a rocket of popularity and it doesn’t seem to stop any time soon. Almost topping the sales list, it’s safe to say that this game is getting a lot of new players that will most likely stay. Dark Age Gaming and ESL are becoming two of the most popular Chivalry: Medieval Warfare Competitive Scene hub sites. You guys may even LEAD the competitive scene soon. Now, couple this with the fact that a lot of players are joining the community, a lot of them will investigate the competitive scene. The absolute best thing that you guys can do is to capitalize on this, making sure that there is enough quality content for these players to see, read and listen to so that they all will be interested to join this scene. I don’t want to cause stress, but you guys have a lot riding on your shoulders. This chance may not come again to make this community grow this much. How this have to do with your style is what you have to think about. Is your style really view-able by most? Does it fit the slow-fast hybrid that is Chivalry’s gameplay? Do you think that your style actually portrays the battle correctly to people who are not there to see it for them self?
I’m sorry of I come of as bashing or overly critical, but it’s just that I’ve seen this happen before. The Team Fortress 2 Competitive Scene suffered greatly here in Europe due to the fact that the major hub site of Competitive TF2 did not endorse the new game mode for the tournaments. Now, our community is decreasing every year because of that fact.

Here’s a cast done by a man called Salamancer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q50-fVi_AQs
He’s a professional TF2 caster. Notice what he’s doing. Because of the fast paced game, he always needs to stay around the action so he doesn’t miss it. He goes off to look at one of the flankers, but mostly stays where the bulk of the action is. He does large sweeps around the map and positions himself on places where he can see the action clearly and well. The moment he zooms in on something, he quickly goes over what it is and then goes to another spot where he can watch the action. He points out certain strategies and movements of players to keep the viewers excited.
I realize that Chivalry isn’t Team Fortress 2, but the same principles apply.

A little lengthy response, sorry about that. I can get a little over passionate about things like this.

EDIT: How tired was I last night when I wrote this?

  • You didn’t seem too tired when you wrote it and your criticisms are definitely fair :D I do blame some of it on Chivalry’s current lackluster spectator mode. My controls are pretty limited and I can’t even make the camera fly any slower or faster besides mouse movements. They are revamping it in the next patch so hopefully it will be a lot better then :D

  • The next shoutcast is up and no blackouts this time!
