Racism and Anti-Sematism in this game.

  • I’ve been playing Chivalry since about a week after launch. At the moment I have around sixty hours played and I really enjoy the game, however, the behavior of the community really worries me. I am deeply sad to see the level of racism and in particular anti-Semitism present in this game.

I’ve just been playing on one of the official UK team objective servers, and have been alongside two players with openly anti-Sematic names. Throughout the match constant racist chat was mate from a small group of players – to the effect that anyone deemed to be a bad player was accused of being a “F***ing Jew” etc. This is something that I find quite shocking. I have seen this behavior coming out more and more since the game was first released and I find it impossible to play alongside such people. As such I was wondering about two points:

    (1) what is the policy regarding players sporting these names / using this language on the official servers. Can they be reported / banned / made to change their name etc?

    (2) Am I alone in finding this behavior both very common in Chivalry (by which I mean I see it most days I play – it is not every player by any means but it is a large minority that seem to engage in this practice) and if not then does anyone else feel that this makes them want to stop playing the game?

  • Unfortunately, this is something you are going to see in EVERY multiplayer FPS type game. It sucks and isn’t fun, but it won’t make me want to stop playing any kind of game. You can disable the chat if you don’t wish to partake in any of it as well.

If you are on the official servers and you are encountering a lot of verbal abuse, then please contact one of the mods in our official steam group. (Click on one of our profiles and click “send message” if we’re online), and we’ll get on there and take care of it.

If you are on a private server, you’ll have to find and talk to the server admins, or you can even issue a vote kick, just be sure to state your reasons (as it will only show team damage and idle % time)

  • Instead of taking words as racist and anti-semitist, do lend thought to the fact that some people use these words with no intended racial meaning or anything whatsoever…There is the counterargument that proliferation of negative words hurts nonetheless, but I do not believe that true. I think people give slurs power over them a lot of the time by reacting negatively.

It’s like Louis CK said, to paraphrase, “when I was a kid we called somebody a faggot because they were being a faggot. I didn’t know what gay was, I didn’t know people did that”

  • Boo hoo people insulted me on the internet.

    Grow up.

I was about to post the same exact thing. Not saying it’s ok, but “effing Jew” to them isn’t saying “eff people of Jewish descent”, but more like “effing dick/asshole”. Not sure why the word “Jew” was chosen to be supplemented though.

This can become quite the philosophical debate. But I recommend if someone is using “bad language” that you deem to be detrimental to your health. You should start a votekick, because if its that bad most people will vote yes since they are seeing what is being said as well. This is an internet based game, so bad language is inevitable. Luckily you can turn chat off, start a votekick, grow thicker skin, or just ignore them. Now that you can’t get out of a votekick by quitting, I’m sure these things will be ironed out by the community.

The solution: cry so many tears that you want to vote kick and hope that the game is full of politically correct weaklings that are just like you.

Great advice. I guess the E-Sports community and their “manners” have seeped into Chivalry. I will await the lack of conversation or shit-talking banter in servers now. Makes the community so much better now that the only people who talk are pussy whipped retards.

But the problem is you could start a votekick against a player in Chivalry for saying “I like Kool Aid” and it would pass with 79%.

Chivalry needs some kind of reputation system that tracks things like intentional teamkills (attacked same teammate multiple times in a row in short period of time) and makes this information very visible, especially during kicks.

No, it just needs people who aren’t effeminate weaklings who can’t deal with the fact that someone is hurling insults at them.

This is why reddit is an awful place to have opinionated discussions; it attracts that kind of crowd.

I can always spot a MOBA player a mile away. Your game always was your words, while most of us let our game talk for us. And I don’t think anyone here is complaining about “shit talking” itself, rather the people who rage racism when they mad.

Why even bother posting this in response to my idea of a relevant and scientific method of bettering the community? What does reddit have to do with anything?

    Nevermind, don’t answer that.

I pity those that cannot compare and contrast.

And I those who are obsessed with reddit.

  • Developer

    Just a positive story…

I don’t remember what server I was on, probably an official classic server, anyhow, one player started spamming insults and complaints laden with the N- word. Before I could finish thinking, hey I should start a vote kick, somebody else had and he was out the door with in the minute.

    That felt awesome.

  • I usually just insult them back by explaining that people whose mommy does not love them look to throw expletives just as a cry for attention, not because they actually feel that way.

    Works 9 times out 10.

My replies to the guy whose name was GOD-HATES-FAGS was even better but I wont post it here.

  • Unfortunately such people are present in any social group, especially online communities where there are little consequences.

I’d only ever act (on an Official server) in the extreme example that abuse was actually directed at another player, would not stop after being asked, and VoteKicks had failed, but the direct abuse continued. If they’re just using a “poor choice of words” then it is absolutely up to the players on the server to decide what is tolerable and what not, and use the tools available.

    These include:

    • Politely asking the player to stop, and explain that there’s no need for it.
    • Muting the person, (It would be nice if Mute cycled through voice, text, or both).
    • Disabling the chat from the Options screen.
    • VoteKick the person, and state why in chat, then see if others on the server share your views.
    • If a VoteKick fails as it is only your personal opinion that the player(s) are going too far, simply leave and find another server that has a community that you enjoy. Usually servers ran by clans or groups of friends are good for this.

I’d personally much rather everyone just got along and had fun but, people are different, and each has completely different levels of what they consider acceptable or crossing the line. We absolutely cannot support punishing the majority for the actions of a minority.

  • I get called the N word every other game and I have killed Hitler more than 50 times, to be honest I just find them to be extremely pathetic little kids with no life and the people defending them to be the genuine racists that has shit for life.

    8-)

I would like to add that, general speaking, this is the friendliest community I have seen in FPS games in a long time. I met very many nice and fun people to play with.

Wow, aren’t you a fucking man’s man. Real internet warrior alpha male.

In any case, saying that calling someone a faggot or a jew is basically the same thing, is just wrong. “Jew” is not a derogatory word, it’s the actual accepted noun used for the jewish people. If you’re using it as an insult, you’re implying that there’s something wrong with being jewish. It’s the same thing as if you now used “black” as an insult. So yeah, some people might use it as a “joke”, but other people can’t know that, and anyways it’s a pretty lousy joke. A word like “faggot” has been so overused that it’s basically lost it’s meaning, and is just a general insult. Unless you’re a flaming homophobe.

  • Iv never seen it but there are crazy people everywhere, some on the net. I think you can mute them. Sc2 has a cool permanent mute feature.
