Weird character bugs chat (makes it invisible)
I’m not sure if this has been reported, but there was a player who joined and whenever he said anything, the chat would bug. Literally everyone on the server would not be able to say anything or see peoples messages, but if you opened the console, you’d be able to see all the messages.
It’s either “?” specifically or "
Here’s some screenshots:
It’s client side, but for all the clients…
is nobody going to confirm this?
should i go on the official servers and show how annoying this is? or will i get banned for bothering to bring to light this bug? someone confirm.
Can only confirm if we can reproduce it or have reliable evidence. That screenshot doesn’t help too much… If you can change your Steam name to that and join a server with me, I’ll be happy to investigate/confirm it.
Reporting bugs will never get you banned lol. If it’s a super major exploit, then it’s preferred if you message one of us (probably SlyGoat or Martin) about it.

I experienced this a few times too, seems to be everything after the < character is invisible, screenshotted it here http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/596995631826834185/7ACE26B0AB1EBFC93F7EF11AB7679AB20517E559/
And you can easily reproduce it: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596995631826987950/E00035BC071F9C114E138DDB25E0405DCEA9D8B3/
It also applies to the scoreboard http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/596995631826990049/B044D8790FB55E0F105348E78D14F94C7D8CCA2F/, the full username shows up in the votekick window
I think I saw this happening last night. Not sure if it was because of a certain character, but the chat stopped working while I could still see messages in the console. Eventually it started working again.
100% reproducible by using setname and starting your name with a < (less-than sign).
Accidentally discovered this a while ago when I named myself <3, forgot to report it. You can also make your name vanish completely by the same token on the scoreboard and killfeed, though other characters can do so as well I believe, since I’ve seen inviso-names without the chat bug.
I confirm, it’s cause by nick names beginning with the sign “>” as can be seen from the screenshot:
