Someone explain this - (High Pings in Server Browser)

  • Spare me the “speedtest selects best server” mantra. This goes past that and you know it.

  • The servers are all around the world so despite your (and my) good ping you just wont get a good ping on something on the other side of the world (usually).

And you are crazy to use the ingame browser, I gave that up a long time ago.

A lot of those servers in my screenshot are east coast USA. Under no circumstances other than bandwidth issues on my end or their end should justify the pings in this second screenshot, unless they are hosted in a public server farm in Siberia.

Well either the server browser is way off or you had a spike.

At least with the Alt browser you can see the IP and put it into

    http://www.just-ping.com

to see what the ping is around the world. I never found the ping to be that accurate - certainly higher than if you just ping the server from the cmd line.

None of the Official servers in the OP screenshot are East Coast. Also, there is a handful of UK, one Brazilian, one Russian, and one French that I see. The pings look about right given your estimated location to the servers.

  • I would also suggest checking to make sure your internet isn’t being drained by anything else while you are playing, such as something downloading in the background (java update, video drivers, a steam game didn’t pause it’s update/download when I loaded up, etc.) another computer using the internet at the same time, spyware hiding somewhere on your system, etc.

I usually have a pretty good ping for most servers in the game browser, but once in a while I have a browser showing nothing but pings between 150-400…. Then I realize that I left something running on the system or my wife is using the net on the laptop, which all increase my ping.

As soon as it’s all stopped, i go back down to a list of servers with pings 60 or below.
