On my system…
ATI 5970 1GB
8 gigs RAM
The game was lagging far more than I suspected it should (avg of 55 frames). I experimented with all the video settings by turning each one off/to low (from highest) and discovered that was having no effect. EXCEPT for dynamic shadows. Turning off dynamic shadows yielded a massive FPS increase and now the game never dips below 90.
Can anyone else confirm that dynamic shadows is a massive fps hog? If so, it looks like there’s an issue with the setting. As far as I can tell, it only add shadows to characters (shadows on the environment seem to be uneffected).
I can confirm that. Surprisingly, a couple hour session on multiple maps just now and fps never sank below 62. That’s really sad because that’s the one graphics effect I don’t WANT to turn off. Nevertheless, it sounds like there’s perhaps some room for optimization there…
Edit: Some more testing on a 32 player server showed that details didn’t matter at all: I tested near-min and maxed details and there was no effect (~30-40fps). Only less gpu usage (from 40% to 80%) with less details, meaning the bottleneck is somewhere else. I’m about to upgrade my cpu some day soonish, so we’ll see if that’ll make any difference.
