I played for a good few hours last night and am gonna be playing a good bit today (I’m sick, and don’t wanna get co-workers infected). It didn’t take too long to get pretty decent at the game (I joined a FFA server and we started dueling). I also had a lot of fun.
There’s a few complaints that you’ve heard before (that mainly affect a new player) such as it’s hard to tell who’s on what team sometimes, after playing for a while I could distinguish knights by the armor style, although footmen were the most easily confused for me.
I also heard some complaints about the flinching system (which I thought was doing just fine) so maybe putting a ‘flinch indicator’ to tell you when you caused them to flinch or vice versa (red “flinch” below reticule for getting flinched, green “flinch” above reticule for causing flinch). And perhaps a kill-cam kind of thing that follows the path of the enemies’ weapon so you can see just how they got past your block.
Hitting with archery seems oddly difficult despite it being a simple system.
I think movement should be changed slightly depending on the weight of your armor, and I don’t mean knights should run slower, I mean they should have a lower rate of acceleration for sprinting and making turns should cause them to lose a bit of speed. Sidestepping I don’t think should be affected, it was mainly them running in zigzag or figure 8’s that confounded me. Should just take them longer to reach full speed from a standing position or to completely change direction of a sprint.
Being an archer with a spear was actually very good in a close combat situation (and I mean almost kissing the guy’s face close). with the (I think) overhead attack button doing a very quick shield bash you can cause flinch or the enemy to lower their guard. I guess the counter is an archer can get one or two shotted. The shield for the javelins makes it extremely hard to see once you raise it to block an attack.
The game is beautiful, the ragdolls are great, the swordplay is intense, the sound sucks you in, the more you play it the more tactical you get, the levels are great so far, nothing seems over powered (maybe except the warhammer, that thing’s great but it has its flaws).
All in all I’m going to keep playing for quite some time and I hope the game grows into its full potential and gets marked down as one of the great swordfighting games to date.
