Let’s make the poleaxe the best weapon in the game by buffing the turncap up again AND buffing release. Such drag
Slash was slowed down, which makes the reverses nowhere near as good and the stab release was reverted to vanilla, so no more retarded stab drags. Every other knight primary that had bad turn speed was buffed to the same amount, why wouldn’t we do it for the poleaxe? Release buffs are just standard releases for a weapon like that, not like messer drags. Messer releases are .6, poleaxe buffed releases are .55. In my experience the overhead and slash drags are ridiculously easy to parry, like the dub axe.
Stab is also significantly slower than vanilla, in line with other weapons that were changed.
The problem with poleaxe and what has always held it back is its general clumsiness and unreliability. It was never consistent and you never felt safe throwing your attacks since they were so easily circle strafed. Vanguards in particular were a nightmare with the old turnspeed. I have over 11,000 kills with the poleaxe and it’s always been one of my favorite weapons, but I would never bring it into a really serious match before. Now it actually has that potential and can be one of the best weapons, alongside the swords.
In my opinion this is the new top 5 knight primaries:
5. Bearded Axe/Grand Mace(undecided)
Bearded Axe is actually better than the Messer on paper (faster slash and overhead, more damage) but in practice it’s a bit harder to use. I think it has a higher skill ceiling and with mastery it would be better than the Messer. Grand Mace I would rate higher than Messer if it still had the one shot to vanguard’s head, but that was voted out. In general I think the knight weapons are extremely well balanced now, especially the ones I just listed and the Maul. The Maul has suffered a lot due to first hit flinch but it still hits like nothing else and can be a game changer. Definitely a dark horse. Dub Axe still has awful range but it has gained a lot of buffs, with some serious dedication (Spook) it’s an absolute beast, but I can’t rate it that high due to range handicap which makes it useless vs vanguards and MAA. Warhammer is a great duel weapon but also suffers in team fights due to range and the fact that it’s kind of tied to shield play. Shields just aren’t good in this game. If you use it without a shield you might as well just use Grand Mace. Flails just got buffed but those will always be garbage in my opinion, due to inconsistency and being tied to a shield.
As for you thinking poleaxe is the best weapon in the game, I definitely disagree. I think it’s an amazing weapon now, but it has weaknesses of course. It is much worse against vanguards than all the knights swords, and absolutely horrible against MAA. I’m always pulling out my broadsword when I run it. Grand Mace and Maul excel a lot more against knights, though poleaxe is great against them as well.
I see poleaxe as a solid all around choice now, with a slight specialization vs knights. It’s the weapon you use when you’re going to be fighting mostly knights but don’t want to go all the way with Grand Mace or Maul and be even worse vs vanguards. The swords are definitely more versatile and the safer bet if the enemy team is running two vanguards or you find yourself having to deal with a pesky MAA a lot.
