    • RE: Dual wielding viking

      @Funkmaster:

      @Rampage:

      Dual-wielding was indeed popular and useful for duelists, pirates, and skirmishers, vikings included. Vikings in particular used small axes to hook into an opponent’s shield so they could thrust with their sword.

      Not to downplay your comment, but I feel it’s worth stating that the vikings mostly used that tactic when doing raids, the big advantage surprise. In the darkness with no warning, you can get close enough that everyone doesn’t have time to form up into a line with archers at the ready. Some people might not think that part through.

      Oh yeah I agree. But like I said, vikings mostly WERE raiders. They didn’t go charging into actual ‘battle’ often.

      A good commentary on dual wielding in real life, and why some of the things listed here are the way they are.

      The relevant part starts at around 2:30

      He’s not wrong, but he’s really speaking only of battle. Dual-wielding was indeed popular and useful for duelists, pirates, and skirmishers, vikings included. Vikings in particular used small axes to hook into an opponent’s shield so they could thrust with their sword. Rapier/Parrying Dagger was common during the Renaissance.

      He does address it at the end for dueling, but skirmishes/raids were also somewhere dual-wielding was useful.

      The guy’s definitely very intelligent, but I feel like he’s making a sweeping generalization. Just because something isn’t useful in large battles doesn’t mean it isn’t useful at all.

    • RE: Question about viking.

      Actually, viking skirmishers used an axe and sword in conjunction together quite often. Not in big battles, no, but vikings rarely partook in big battles as a whole; they were raiders first and foremost.

      The axe/sword combo wasn’t very defensible in a group, but against isolated shield-users, it allowed the viking to hook the axe into the shield, rip it away, then stab with the sword. Since wooden shields were extremely popular in Europe at the time, it was a viable tactic.

      @clayton-bigsby:

      you just fuck right off!

      no.

      There’s pistols, shotguns, shurikens, throwing javelins, crossbows, yumi bow, throwing knives, vikings throwing swords/shields, flaming rum, blinding sand…

      NO NEED FOR MORE RANGED COMBAT, THERE IS FUCKING PLENTY ENOUGH!

      Yo let’s keep the vitriol to a minimum, eh? It was a polite enough question.

      Awesome, I’ll try it out and see how it feels, thanks!

      Conceptually, dane axe/norse sword is basically my dream composition; it would be useful then?

      Also, does every stab use both weapons, or do you control it somehow?

      @dragonmith:

      Damage is a good reason, 42 on the stab I believe? Don’t know the real numbers…

      I like it mainly because I don’t like blocking with shield, so I toss it and duel rampage :P

      But what advantage is there to dual-wielding over just wielding the norse sword by itself, for example? Or compared to the spear/hammer/skeggox?

    • Viking Dual-Wielding, any reason to do it?

      So I main viking and love the class, but I’m wondering, is there any point to dual-wielding? The only benefits [besides the desync bug, which doesn’t count] to it I can find are having a lot of quick throwing ammo and pretty quick recovery times, which I don’t feel is enough to trump the hammer and spear’s range and damage.

      Is there a reason I should consider dual-wielding?

    • RE: Seriously, why are lobbies not implemented?

      @Daiyuki:

      Server list where you can pick whatever gametype/map/ping you want > Lobbies and matchmaking

      That would be great if the game worked ANYTHING like that. Unfortunately, all I get is a vague description [team deathmatch, last team standing, etc] without any details on what classes are being played, how many teams are included, etc. All critical information that has an overwhelming effect on how interested I am in a particular server.

      So until they either find some way to tell me what the hell kind of game I’m actually joining, no, I don’t agree with you.

      While the server browser is indeed perpetually broken, the ‘friends’ tab currently works. Use this to join servers with friends.

      Thanks, but that only solves one of my perhaps half-dozen problems with server browsers.
