Hello! I’ve been playing Chivalry for the past couple weeks and have really fallen in love with this game. I always held the opinion that Mount & Blade and PVK had the best melee combat (sadly, I missed out on the AoC mod), but Chivalry just blows everything I’ve ever played out of the water. It’s so simple and strategic, and some of the fights you can get into are just crazy, parrying back and forth and trying to fake out each other or bypass blocks with big jumping overheads or low swings.
I love how each weapon variation differs only slightly from one another, but it’s a whole new thing to learn, with the slight changes in speed and range being complete gamechangers. Having to learn that one sword combo is just a bit too fast for the weapon you’re using to be able to capitalize on a whiff, or being able to predict that an enemy will miss their poke and then you can go in for the counter etc, feels fantastic.
I find myself liking the simple game modes more - FFA and KOTH especially. LMS is too slow paced for me, and I really dislike how far you have to run in most TO maps, although the objectives can create some interesting strategy.
FFA is definitely my favorite, though. In most games I think of FFA as a gimmick; shooters especially, since there’s not much you can do to prevent yourself just randomly dying by someone spraying bullets at you. However, in Chivalry, the amount of mindgames and strategy that appear in FFA makes it so fun, and a really legitimate game mode. I especially love when 3 people meet up in a 1v1v1 and are all sort of circling one another, making a rough triangle, testing each other with swings and parries, until one guy finally falls into the middle and has to make these desperate parries and try really hard to survive and escape death. I had a moment like this last night where I was simultaneously ducking one guys swing and parrying the other player, who then got hit by the swing I duck, so I capitalized on that and finished him off and quickly spun around and barely managed to parry the other players incoming swing.
I see a lot of people complaining about backstabbing in FFA, but that as well is part of why I love it. You’ll be dueling someone, and then hear footsteps, you glance behind you and see a vanguard charging in… so now you have to quickly make decisions: do you turn around and poke the vanguard, leaving yourself exposed to your dueling partner? Do you try and go in, maybe get a little sloppy, to finish off a weakened opponent? Or do you just try and run and let the two players engage each other, then come back and try to backstab one of them? It forces you to constantly be aware of your surroundings, and make these on-the-spot decisions about how to best handle things. It’s just so fun, I could rant about it all day, but I do actually find myself becoming “better” at FFA and all the unique situations it places you into.
I will say that while the gameplay is ridiculously good, I do think the rest of the game could use a lot of love. The UI especially is pretty bad, but I’m sure the team is aware of this. One of the main issues, I think, is not properly alerting players when they’ve been team switched - I see most of the team killing that happens is after someone has been autobalanced and they didn’t realize it.
Anyway, really love the game, and looking forward to any updates!
